The black dense board screw is a purpose-built fixing for attaching dense board to timber stud work. Not your average drywall screw — these have been engineered specifically for the denser, heavier boards that standard screws tend to struggle with. The 25° super sharp point cuts cleanly on entry without needing a pilot hole, which matters when you’re halfway up a wall on a Friday afternoon and time is not on your side.

The high-low thread design is the key to how these perform. Alternating thread heights increase pull-out resistance into both timber and thin sheet metal, so the fixing stays put under load rather than gradually working loose over time. Paired with a coarse thread for extreme hold, this is a screw that grips properly from the moment it’s driven home.

Where the Black Dense Board Screw Earns Its Keep

The reduced countersunk head is a detail worth paying attention to. Dense board is harder and less forgiving than standard plasterboard, and a full-size countersunk head will often sit proud or crack the board face if driven with any real pace. The reduced head profile countersinks cleanly into the board surface without the drama. Finish is consistently flat, which saves time on filling and boarding prep before skimming.

Drive is via a Phillips No.2 recess. Standard bit, no faffing around with specialist drivers. PH2 engagement is positive and the head is unlikely to cam out under load, which is more than can be said for a few cheaper options on the market.

The black phosphate finish provides a decent level of corrosion resistance for internal applications. These screws also carry an A1 fire classification, making them suitable for use in fire-rated partitioning systems where the specification requires it. That is not a detail to overlook when working to a building regulation or a main contractor’s spec sheet.

Available in 3.9 x 25mm, 3.9 x 38mm and 3.9 x 42mm, supplied in boxes of 1000.

Pro Tip: When fixing dense board at pace with a cordless driver, dial the clutch back slightly compared to standard plasterboard settings — the reduced head will countersink cleanly without the risk of cracking the harder board face if you let the clutch do its job.
