The zinc multi-purpose screw is the workhorse of any site toolbox. If you’ve got a van, there’s a reasonable chance you’ve already got a box of these rolling around somewhere in it. Available in sizes from 3.0x13mm all the way through to 6.0x120mm, these cover the vast majority of everyday fixing jobs without needing to faff about with specialist fixings. The zinc plating gives solid corrosion resistance for internal use and sheltered external applications, which is what you’d expect from this type of screw.

The countersunk Pozi head is the standard here. That means one driver bit handles the whole job, which is exactly how it should be. Whether you’re fixing skirting, building stud walls, putting up shelving, fitting kitchen carcasses or just generally holding the world together with timber, the zinc multi-purpose screw does the job cleanly and predictably. The sharp gimlet point bites quickly into softwood without pre-drilling in most cases, saving time on repetitive work.

Where Zinc Multi-Purpose Screws Get Used

Timber framing, first and second fix joinery, MDF and chipboard work, decking boards in sheltered spots, battening, cabinet assembly — honestly, the list is longer than a Monday morning snag sheet. These screws are chosen by joiners, site carpenters, kitchen fitters and general builders as the default fixing because they cover so much ground without requiring anything unusual from your toolbelt.

Choosing the Right Size

As a general rule, the screw length should be roughly two to three times the thickness of the board you’re fixing through. So for 18mm sheet material you’re probably looking at 40mm to 50mm, and for standard 22mm flooring into joists, a 50mm or 60mm screw works well. The smaller diameters like 3.0mm and 3.5mm are well suited to fine joinery and thinner sections where a larger gauge would split the timber. Go up to 5.0mm and 6.0mm for heavier structural fixing where you need more pull-out strength.

Sold in boxes of 100 or 200 depending on size, these are priced to make sense whether you’re topping up or buying in bulk for a longer job. Keep a few different sizes on the van and you’ll rarely find yourself reaching for anything else.

Pro Tip: Keep a magnetic bit holder loaded with a PZ2 bit permanently in your belt pouch when using these — swapping drivers mid-job adds up to a surprising amount of dead time over a full day's work.
