Where Zinc Multi-Purpose Screws Get Used

Choosing the Right Size
As a general rule, the screw length should be roughly two to three times the thickness of the board you’re fixing through. So for 18mm sheet material you’re probably looking at 40mm to 50mm, and for standard 22mm flooring into joists, a 50mm or 60mm screw works well. The smaller diameters like 3.0mm and 3.5mm are well suited to fine joinery and thinner sections where a larger gauge would split the timber. Go up to 5.0mm and 6.0mm for heavier structural fixing where you need more pull-out strength.

Not suitable for: Not suitable for fully exposed external applications or ground contact where stainless steel or A4-rated fixings would be required. Not recommended for fixing into masonry without appropriate plugs.
In softwood, these screws will self-start without pre-drilling in most cases. For hardwood, MDF edges, or anywhere near the end grain of a board, pilot drilling first will prevent splitting and give a much cleaner finish. Use a PZ2 bit for the 3.5mm to 5.0mm range and check your driver clutch setting to avoid overdriving the head into the surface.
For sheet materials like chipboard or MDF, drive the screw so the head sits just flush or fractionally below the surface. Countersinking first gives a neater result if the work is going to be seen. Avoid over-tightening when fixing into MDF or thin sheet as the thread can strip the material if you push it.
Select the correct screw length — aim for two to three times the thickness of the top material
For hardwood or end grain, drill a pilot hole slightly smaller than the screw shank diameter
For sheet materials like MDF, countersink the hole first if a flush or recessed finish is needed

Do I need to pre-drill when using these in softwood?
In most softwood applications you can drive these straight in without pre-drilling, which is one of the reasons they're so popular on site. For hardwood, near edges, or into end grain you should always pilot drill first to avoid splitting the timber and to get a cleaner drive.
Are these suitable for outdoor use?
Zinc plated screws are fine for sheltered external use such as under eaves or in covered structures, but in fully exposed conditions the zinc coating will eventually break down. For anything taking direct weather, choose stainless steel or hot-dip galvanised fixings instead.
