PVC insulating tape is one of those things that turns up on every job, in every bag, and somehow still runs out at the worst possible moment. This is the premium quality version — not the bargain bin stuff that splits when it’s cold and lifts off a cable after a fortnight. Flame resistant and self-extinguishing, it meets BS3924 and BS4J10, which matters when you’re working in installations where specification compliance is expected rather than optional.
Each roll is 19mm wide and 33 metres long, which gives a decent amount of tape per roll without the bulk. Sold in packs of ten, it’s the sensible way to buy for any sparky, electrician, or installer who doesn’t want to be sending someone to the merchant halfway through a rewire because the last roll disappeared into a colleague’s van.
PVC Insulating Tape in All the Right Colours
The colour range here is genuinely useful. Black is the workhorse — used for general insulation, bundling, and protection across most applications. Red, yellow, and blue cover phase identification for three-phase work. Brown, grey, and black again handle the new harmonised cable colour coding. Green and yellow together, as a single tape, is the standard for earth conductors. White is handy for neutral identification or marking. The point is, buying this as a mixed pack or stocking multiple colours means you’re not improvising on site with the wrong tape because the right one isn’t there.
The flame-resistant properties are worth noting separately. PVC insulating tape that self-extinguishes if it catches a flame is not just a nice-to-have — in enclosed consumer units, ceiling voids, or any install where the tape is left in situ for years, it’s the right choice. The material holds well in a reasonable temperature range and won’t peel back prematurely under normal working conditions.
Buying in tens rather than singles makes obvious sense on cost per roll, and having a box of each colour in the van covers the vast majority of what comes up day to day. Good tape is one of those purchases where buying cheap twice costs more than buying right once.
Pro Tip: In cold weather, warm the tape roll briefly in your pocket before use — cold PVC loses elasticity and the tape is far more likely to split or fail to bond cleanly at the overlap.
