Zinc plated coach screws are the go-to fixing when you need a serious bite into timber. These hex head screws conform to DIN571 standards and are used across construction, fencing, decking, landscaping and general structural work. The zinc plating gives a reliable level of corrosion resistance, which matters when you’re working outdoors or in damp conditions. Whether you’re bolting down posts, securing gate hardware or fixing joist hangers, these screws get the job done without fuss.
The hex head is what sets coach screws apart from a standard wood screw. You drive them with a socket or spanner rather than a screwdriver, which means more torque and a far more secure fixing in dense or structural timber. If you’re regularly installing large sections of softwood or hardwood, working with a socket driver makes the job considerably quicker than you might expect. Ratchet spanner, impact driver with the right socket, even a standard cordless drill with a socket adapter — all work well here.
Zinc Plated Coach Screws: Size Range and Compatibility
This range covers diameters from 6mm to 12mm and lengths from 25mm up to 200mm, so there’s a size to suit most structural and general timber fixing requirements. Several sizes in this range are compatible with both rimmed and rimless wall plugs, which is worth knowing if you’re fixing into masonry as well as timber on the same job. That saves carrying two types of fixing to site.
The zinc plating provides solid everyday corrosion protection, making these suitable for external use in normal conditions. For ground contact or highly exposed marine environments, a hot-dip galvanised or stainless option would be more appropriate, but for the vast majority of outdoor timber jobs these will serve well.
Available in box quantities, so you can buy the right amount for the job without over-ordering or running short halfway through.
Pro Tip: When driving coach screws into hardwood, drill a pilot hole to around 70% of the shank diameter to prevent splitting and reduce the torque needed, which saves your wrist and your drill battery.
