Waterproof dust sheets come in all shapes and sizes, but most of them were designed with a flat floor in mind. Stairs are a different problem altogether. You need length, you need something that stays put, and you need it to actually stop liquid rather than just slow it down. This barrier sheet is purpose-built for exactly that job, running 7.3 metres long and just 1 metre wide so it covers a full staircase and the hallway connecting to it without bunching up or leaving gaps at the edges.
The fabric is lightweight but genuinely waterproof. Paint, solvents, silicone and dirty water from muddy work boots all sit on the surface rather than soaking through to the carpet or flooring underneath. That matters on site, because a standard cotton dust sheet will let a splashed tin of emulsion bleed straight through in minutes. This one won’t. The material also drapes well, which means it follows the step profile properly and lies flush against skirting boards and walls rather than bridging awkwardly across corners.
Why These Waterproof Dust Sheets Work Better on Stairs
The sheet is 100% lint-free, so there is no shedding onto freshly painted surfaces or onto client’s carpets when you roll it up at the end of the day. That alone makes it worth the money if you are working in occupied properties. It is also mould-resistant, which matters if the sheet gets damp and ends up folded in the van for a few days before you get a chance to wash it.
Speaking of which, it is fully machine washable. Buy a couple, rotate them, keep one clean and one in use. Over repeated washes and jobs this pays for itself quickly compared to single-use polythene options that end up in the skip every time.
Protection Against More Than Just Paint
The resistance list on this sheet is worth noting: paint, solvents, silicone sealant, dust, general debris and muddy boot traffic. It is a proper multi-trade sheet, not just something aimed at decorators. Plumbers running a bathroom job, kitchen fitters moving in and out, tilers carrying mix through a hallway — this sheet handles the kind of repeated foot traffic and incidental spillage that comes with most domestic jobs without giving up on either end.
At 7.3 metres long it fits a standard two-storey staircase with enough left over to fold back at the bottom landing, giving you a double layer where the heaviest foot traffic tends to land.
Pro Tip: Fold the bottom metre back on itself at the foot of the stairs to create a double-thickness section where boots land hardest — it stops the sheet shifting and gives extra protection right where it gets the most punishment.
This sheet is used wherever a staircase and connecting hallway needs protecting during work. Decorators painting stairwells, kitchen and bathroom fitters moving materials through the house, carpet fitters protecting stairs before a new floor goes down, and general builders on domestic refurb jobs all use a sheet like this to keep client carpets and flooring clean. It works equally well laid flat along a hallway or draped over stair treads, and its length means it typically covers the full run without needing to overlap multiple sheets.

100% lint-free construction
Mould-resistant when damp
Machine washable and reusable
7.3m x 1m coverage
Not suitable for: Not suitable for use as a roof or outdoor weather covering. The 1 metre width means it will not cover wide landings or open-plan flooring on its own.
Lay the sheet from the top of the staircase downward, letting it follow the step profile naturally. The material is flexible enough to sit flush against each tread and riser without needing to be pinned. At the bottom, fold the excess back onto itself to create a thicker section at the hallway entrance where boot traffic is heaviest.
At the end of the job, shake off loose debris outside, then machine wash before storing. Avoid folding while still damp if possible, though the mould-resistant fabric will tolerate short periods of damp storage if it cannot be avoided.
Start at the top of the staircase and unroll the sheet downward over the treads
Allow the fabric to drape naturally against each step, pressing it flush into corners and against the skirting
Fold the bottom section back on itself at the hallway entrance for double-layer protection under foot traffic
Tuck the edges against the skirting boards along the hallway run to stop the sheet shifting during the job
At the end of the day, shake loose debris off the sheet before bringing it indoors
Machine wash after use and allow to dry fully before storing
Is this sheet actually waterproof or just water-resistant?
It is genuinely waterproof. The barrier fabric prevents penetration of liquids including paint, solvents and silicone rather than just slowing absorption. A standard cotton dust sheet will let liquid through fairly quickly; this one will not.
How many times can it be washed before it starts to lose effectiveness?
The sheet is designed for repeated machine washing as part of normal use. There is no specific wash limit stated, but with reasonable care it should last a full season of regular jobs. Avoid high heat in the dryer to preserve the waterproof barrier layer.
Will it cover a full staircase in a standard two-storey house?
Yes, 7.3 metres is enough to cover a typical two-storey staircase and extend into the hallway at the bottom. On a particularly long staircase you may reach the bottom with less excess than usual, but coverage from top to foot of stairs should not be an issue.
The sheet is constructed from a lightweight, multi-layer barrier fabric that blocks liquid penetration while remaining flexible enough to conform to irregular surfaces. The 100% lint-free construction means no fibre shedding during use or removal. The material carries resistance to mould growth, which extends its serviceable life even when stored damp between jobs. Machine washable at standard domestic temperatures.
