A stretchy, self-fusing tape that bonds to itself to create a watertight, insulating seal. No adhesive needed. Works on pipes, electrical connections, coax cables, and automotive wiring. Peel, wrap, and it does the rest.

Self-amalgamating waterproof tape is one of those things you discover once and then wonder how you managed without it. Unlike standard insulating tape, this stuff has no adhesive — instead, it fuses to itself when stretched and overlapped, forming a seamless, watertight seal that won’t unravel, slip or dry out over time. It’s used across electrical, plumbing, automotive and aerial installation work wherever you need a reliable waterproof wrap without reaching for heat shrink or resin.

The principle is straightforward. Strip off the protective backing layer, stretch the tape as you wrap it tightly around the joint or connection, and the layers bond together as they compress. Given enough overlap — typically 50% per pass — you end up with something that behaves more like a moulded rubber sleeve than a wrapped tape. Water and moisture simply have nowhere to get in.

Where Self-Amalgamating Waterproof Tape Gets Used

Aerial and satellite installations are probably the most common trade application. Where a coax cable enters an LNB or polariser housing, it’s exposed to the elements year-round. Standard tape lifts, admits moisture, and causes signal loss. A wrap of self-amalgamating tape seals that entry point properly and stays put through a British winter — and a British summer, for that matter, which can be almost as bad.

On the plumbing side, it’s useful for making temporary repairs to leaking pipes while a proper fix is organised, and for protecting joints and fittings in damp or outdoor environments. In automotive work it’s popular for protecting wiring looms, insulating battery terminals, and sealing any exposed connections under the bonnet or beneath the vehicle.

Electrical Insulation Properties

Beyond waterproofing, this tape provides good electrical insulation, which makes it a practical choice for wrapping joints in low-voltage wiring runs where a dual-purpose solution is useful. It handles temperature variation well and won’t go brittle in cold conditions the way some standard tapes do — a practical consideration if you’re working on outdoor or unheated installations through the winter months.

At £3.99 a roll it’s not an item worth overthinking. Keep one in the van and you’ll find a use for it sooner than you’d expect.

Pro Tip: Always stretch the tape to around 70% of its length as you wrap — if you're not stretching it, you're not activating the self-amalgamating process and the seal won't be nearly as effective.
