The end feed obtuse elbow 45 degree is one of those fittings that does not get much attention until you need one and cannot find it. Used to change pipe direction at 45 degrees rather than the sharper 90, it keeps flow smoother and gives a tidier run where a right angle would look clumsy or restrict water movement. These fittings are WRAS approved, meaning they meet Water Regulations Advisory Scheme standards for use in domestic and commercial potable water installations.
End feed fittings work by accepting the pipe into the fitting socket, then being soldered to create a watertight joint. There is no integral solder ring here, which means the installer controls exactly how much solder goes in. Done correctly, end feed joints are clean, reliable and long-lasting. They have been the standard method for copper pipework for decades, and for good reason.
Where the 45 Degree End Feed Obtuse Elbow Gets Used
This fitting comes into its own when routing pipes around obstacles, changing direction gradually within a tight ceiling void, or running pipework along a wall where a 90 degree elbow would create an awkward kink. Plumbers fitting heating circuits, cold water mains, or hot water distribution runs will reach for this fitting regularly. The 45 degree angle also helps reduce turbulence in higher-flow applications compared to a sharp elbow, which matters more than people sometimes admit.
Available Sizes
These elbows are available in 15mm, 22mm, 28mm and 35mm, covering the most common copper pipe sizes used in residential and light commercial plumbing. Whether you are running 15mm to a radiator or 35mm on a primary circuit, there is a size to match. Sold in box quantities of 10 or 25, they are priced for trade use rather than a single DIY job. Stock a few of each size and you will rarely be caught short mid-install.
Pro Tip: Always clean and flux both the pipe end and the inside of the fitting socket before applying heat, and let the solder be drawn into the joint by capillary action rather than flooding it from outside.
