Drill a clean hole through both timber members slightly smaller than the bolt shank so the square shoulder seats firmly and resists rotation. Drive the bolt through from the face side, fit the washer and hex nut on the reverse, then tighten with a spanner. The domed head requires no tool on the bolt side provided the square shoulder has engaged properly with the timber.
For longer bolts in thicker sections, make sure the threaded portion extends sufficiently beyond the second timber face to allow the nut and washer to engage fully. On pressure-treated timber, pre-drilling is especially important as the denser grain can cause the shoulder to shear rather than grip if forced.
Mark bolt positions accurately before drilling to ensure proper alignment between timber members

Why are the longer bolts only partially threaded?
Bolts over 150mm are partially threaded as standard practice for carriage bolts used in thicker timber. The plain shank fits snugly through the timber body and reduces movement, while the thread at the end engages the nut cleanly. Fully threading a long bolt adds cost and actually gives a looser fit in deep sections.
Will these bolts work with pressure-treated timber?
Yes. The multi-layer corrosion resistant coating is designed for outdoor and treated timber environments. The chemicals used in pressure-treated wood can be aggressive on ordinary zinc fixings over time, so the 500-hour salt spray rating on these gives you meaningful long-term protection.
Do I need a tool on the bolt head when tightening?
Not if the square anti-spin shoulder is properly seated in the timber. Drive the bolt through a correctly sized pilot hole and the shoulder grips the wood, allowing you to tighten the nut from the reverse side alone. If the hole is oversized and the shoulder spins, you will need to grip the dome head with an adjustable spanner or mole grips.
