The 1 gang dry lining box is one of those products that every sparky and first-fix electrician goes through by the barrowload. Available in 35mm and 45mm depths, these white plastic back boxes are designed specifically for installation into plasterboard on stud partition walls. No plugging, no drilling into masonry — the lugs swing out and clamp against the back of the board as you tighten the screws. Simple, quick, and it works every time.
At under 50p each, it’s worth having a decent stack on the van. Running short of back boxes mid-first-fix is the kind of thing that turns a productive day into a frustrating one. Both depths are available, so you can match the box to the chase depth or cable routing requirement. The 35mm suits standard situations where space behind the board is tighter; the 45mm gives you a little more room to work with when connectors or larger cable bundles are involved.
Where 1 Gang Dry Lining Boxes Fit In
These boxes are used wherever a single socket, switch, or fused spur is being installed into a plasterboard partition. That covers most new-build domestic first-fix, commercial fit-out on metal stud and board systems, and domestic renovation work where stud walls are being added or rerouted. They are not limited to electricians — AV installers, data and comms engineers, and anyone fitting wall plates into board will reach for the same box.
Depth Selection
If in doubt, the 45mm depth is often the more practical choice. It accommodates back-entry cables more comfortably and gives you more room to fold conductors without cramping the socket or switch you’re fitting to it. The 35mm is the right call when space behind the board is genuinely restricted, or where the finish depth needs to be kept low.
These are standard 25mm square knockout pattern boxes, compatible with all common UK single gang faceplates. Bulk pricing is available — the more you buy, the better the unit rate, and these are exactly the kind of consumable that rewards buying ahead.
Pro Tip: Always cut the plasterboard aperture slightly undersize and ease it out rather than cutting it too large — a box that drops through the hole is far harder to rescue than one that needs a bit more persuasion going in.
Dry lining boxes are used in stud partition walls throughout domestic and commercial first-fix electrical work. They are the standard choice for single sockets, light switches, two-way switches, and fused connection units wherever the wall construction is plasterboard on a timber or metal stud frame. Common in new-build housing, office fit-out, retail refurbishment, and loft or extension projects where masonry back boxes would not be appropriate.

Key Features
- Swing-out lug clamping system
- Standard 25mm square knockout pattern
- Compatible with all UK single gang faceplates
- No fixings into masonry required
- Lightweight plastic construction
Not suitable for: Not suitable for installation into solid masonry walls — use a standard masonry back box for brick, block or concrete. Not intended for surface mounting.
Mark and cut the aperture in the plasterboard using a jab saw or pad saw. Feed the cables through before offering the box into the hole. Press the box flush against the board surface, then tighten the retaining screws to swing the lugs out behind the plasterboard until the box sits firm and level.
- Mark the position of the box on the plasterboard using the box itself as a template
- Cut the aperture carefully with a jab saw — err on the side of slightly smaller
- Feed your cables through the appropriate knockouts before fitting the box
- Offer the box into the aperture and ensure it sits flush with the board face
- Tighten the retaining screws evenly to deploy the lugs behind the board
- Check the box is secure and level before connecting any conductors
What is the difference between the 35mm and 45mm depths?
The depth refers to how far the box protrudes behind the plasterboard face. A 45mm box gives more room for cables and connectors inside the box, which is useful when larger cable bundles or back-entry wiring is involved. The 35mm is the right choice where space behind the board is restricted.
Will these boxes fit standard UK single gang faceplates?
Yes. These are standard 1 gang back boxes with the common 25mm square knockout arrangement, compatible with all standard UK single gang faceplates from any mainstream manufacturer.
Can I use these on a metal stud partition as well as timber?
Yes. The clamping lug system grips the plasterboard itself, so the box works regardless of whether the stud behind is timber or metal. The fixings bear on the board, not the stud.
Constructed from white moulded plastic with a swing-out lug fixing system designed to clamp against the rear face of plasterboard. Available in 35mm and 45mm depths to suit different installation requirements. Compatible with standard UK single gang faceplate fixing centres. Knockouts provided for cable entry on multiple sides.
