Aluminium clout nails are the standard fixing for roofing felt, roof slates, fibre cement slates, and similar sheet materials where a large flat head is needed to hold material firmly without tearing through. The wide head spreads the load, the aluminium shank resists corrosion in exposed conditions, and because aluminium does not contain zinc or other reactive metals, it will not stain or react with materials that would be marked by galvanised fixings. If you are fixing to timber battens on a roof, or securing membrane before tiling, aluminium clout nails are the correct specification for most modern roofing work.

Available in a wide range of sizes from 20mm x 3.35mm through to 85mm x 3.35mm, these nails cover the full range of roofing and sheet fixing tasks. Shorter lengths suit lightweight felt and thin membranes fixed to timber battens. Longer sizes are used where deeper penetration is needed, or where the substrate is thicker. The 1kg bag is a practical buying unit for smaller jobs or for topping up stock on a van.

Where Aluminium Clout Nails Are Used

Aluminium clout nails are specified for roofing because the material holds up in wet and exposed conditions without rusting or corroding. Steel fixings, including galvanised nails, can deteriorate over time in persistently damp environments, and the resulting staining or expansion can damage the surrounding material. Aluminium avoids that problem entirely. It will not rust, it will not react with most common roofing materials, and it will not leave streaks down a finished roof. On fibre cement slates in particular, aluminium is often the manufacturer-specified fixing material, so it is worth checking the installation instructions before reaching for whatever is closest.

Sizing and Selection

Choosing the right size comes down to the thickness of the material being fixed and the depth of penetration required into the batten or substrate beneath. As a general rule, the nail should penetrate at least 25mm into the timber beyond the material being fixed. For standard 3mm roofing felt on a 25mm batten, a 38mm nail is a common choice. For heavier slates or thicker materials, step up accordingly. The range available here covers the most common specifications, and buying by the kilogram makes it straightforward to order the exact size you need without buying excess.

Sold in 1kg bags, with a 10-bag box quantity available for larger jobs or trade stock. A practical, no-nonsense fixing that does the job it is designed for without complication.

Pro Tip: Check the slate or felt manufacturer's fixing specification before ordering: fibre cement slates in particular often require aluminium nails specifically, and using galvanised nails can void the material warranty.
