The Bolt Down Post Shoe Quick Fit HDG is a straightforward solution for setting fence posts without digging or concreting them into the ground. The shoe fixes directly to an existing concrete pad, slab, or timber base using bolts through the base plate, then the post drops into the collar and is secured in place. The result is a solid, permanent fence post base that holds firm once installed properly.
Hot dip galvanising gives this shoe the corrosion resistance needed for permanent outdoor use. The HDG coating is applied by immersing the steel in molten zinc, which bonds to the surface and protects it from rust far more effectively than a painted or electroplated finish. For fence installations that are meant to last, that matters.
The quick fit design speeds things up on site. There is no need to mix concrete around every post or wait for it to cure before moving on. You bolt the shoe down, drop the post in, and fix it through the pre-drilled holes in the collar. If a post ever needs replacing down the line, the shoe stays in place and the new post simply slots back in. That is a genuine convenience that you only really appreciate the first time you have to swap out a rotten post.
Where Bolt Down Post Shoe Applications Make Sense
This type of fence post base is well suited to situations where digging is not practical or desirable. Installations on concrete yards, paved areas, driveways, timber decking, and hard standings are all typical uses. It is also the right approach where ground conditions make post driving or in-ground concreting difficult, such as shallow soil over hardcore or areas with underground services close to the surface.
The two available sizes cover the most common timber fence post dimensions. The 75mm shoe suits standard 75x75mm posts used in most domestic and light commercial fencing. The 100mm shoe handles 100x100mm posts, which are commonly used for heavier panel fencing, agricultural gates, and perimeter fencing where a stronger post section is specified.
Sizing and Installation Notes
Always check the post section size against the collar dimensions before ordering. The post should fit snugly into the collar with no significant play. A sloppy fit will compromise the rigidity of the installation. When bolting the base plate down, use appropriately sized masonry anchors or coach screws for the substrate, and make sure the shoe is positioned accurately before drilling, because adjusting bolt positions after the fact is more work than it sounds.
For exposed locations or coastal areas, the hot dip galvanised finish on this fence post base is the appropriate choice. A standard zinc-plated or self-colour fitting would not hold up to the same level of weathering over time. The HDG shoe is intended to outlast the timber it holds.
Pro Tip: When fixing to a concrete base, use M10 or M12 chemical anchors rather than mechanical expansion anchors if the concrete is thinner than 100mm, as expansion anchors can cause the slab to crack under the shear loads a fence post transmits in wind.
