SDS Plus rectangular cutter for cutting double back-box recesses in brick, breeze block and concrete block. Tungsten carbide blades cut a 154mm x 77mm recess. Used with the BCR77N circular hole cutter and a 2kg SDS+ drill with roto stop.
The double electrical box cutter is a purpose-built SDS Plus cutter designed to cut clean, accurate 154mm x 77mm rectangular recesses in brick, breeze block and concrete block. If you’ve ever tried to chisel out a double back-box recess by hand, you’ll appreciate what this thing does for you. Works with a 2kg SDS+ rotary hammer drill running in hammer-only mode (roto stop), using tungsten carbide blades that handle masonry up to 45 Newton hardness without complaint.
This is a kit rather than a standalone cutter. It works in conjunction with the BCR77N circular hole cutter, which you use first to cut the pilot recess. The double box cutter then takes over to square off the corners and complete the rectangular profile. That two-stage approach is what makes the cut clean and accurate rather than ragged — the circular cutter removes the bulk of the material, and the rectangular cutter defines the final shape. Both are SDS Plus shank, so they go straight into the same drill.
Where the Double Electrical Box Cutter Gets Used
This is squarely an electrician’s tool, though first-fix builders and sparks working on new builds or refurbs will get plenty of use from it. Cutting double back-boxes into solid masonry walls is one of those jobs that takes far too long with a cold chisel and bolster. This cutter turns that into a straightforward power tool operation.
The tungsten carbide blades are what make this work in masonry. Carbide holds an edge far longer than standard steel when cutting abrasive materials like brick and block, so you’re not constantly resharpening or replacing. The SDS Plus shank is the standard connection for rotary hammer drills in this class, meaning compatibility with most contractor-grade machines is a given.
Worth noting: this only works with drills that have a roto stop or hammer-only mode. Spinning the cutter in rotation mode against masonry won’t end well for you, the drill, or the cutter. Check your drill has that mode before ordering.
Pro Tip: Always cut the circular pilot hole with the BCR77N first before using the double box cutter — trying to go straight in with the rectangular cutter skips the step that makes the finished recess clean and reduces stress on the carbide blades.
Used by electricians and first-fix trades cutting double back-box recesses into solid masonry walls. Suitable for brick, breeze block and concrete block up to 45 Newton hardness. Common on domestic and commercial first-fix work, refurbishments, and rewires where double sockets or switches need to be flush-mounted into a solid wall. Not a tool that sits idle once you own it if you work on masonry regularly.
Best For
Cutting double back-box recesses in solid masonry
Domestic and commercial first-fix electrical work
Rewires in brick or block-built properties
Flush-mount double socket and switch installations
Compatible With
SDS Plus rotary hammer drills (2kg class)
Drills with roto stop or hammer-only mode
BCR77N circular hole cutter (used first for pilot hole)
Not suitable for: Not suitable for use on materials harder than 45 Newton. Will not work correctly without a drill that has a dedicated hammer-only (roto stop) mode — rotation during use will damage the cutter and is unsafe.
Start by fitting the BCR77N circular hole cutter to your SDS Plus drill and cutting the pilot recess at each end of the intended double box position. This removes the bulk of the material and gives the rectangular cutter a defined start point. Once both circular holes are cut, swap to the double electrical box cutter and work across the recess to cut and clear the remaining masonry between them.
Set your drill to hammer-only mode before you start. Keep the cutter perpendicular to the wall surface and apply steady, controlled pressure. Let the tool do the work — forcing it increases wear on the carbide blades and makes the cut less accurate. Clear loose debris from the recess before offering up the back box to check the fit.
Fit the BCR77N circular hole cutter to your SDS Plus drill
Mark the wall for both circular pilot holes at each end of the double box position
Cut both circular pilot holes using hammer-only mode on the drill
Swap to the double electrical box cutter, keeping the SDS Plus shank secure in the chuck
Set the drill to hammer-only (roto stop) mode — do not use rotation mode
Position the cutter centrally between the two pilot holes and apply steady forward pressure
Work methodically across the recess to clear the remaining masonry between the pilot holes
Clear loose debris and offer up the back box to check the recess dimensions before fixing
Do I need the BCR77N circular cutter as well, or does this kit include it?
This is the double box cutter kit only. The BCR77N circular hole cutter is sold separately but is required to cut the pilot holes before using this tool. The rectangular cutter is designed to work after the circular pilot holes have been cut, not as a standalone solution.
Will this work with any SDS Plus drill?
It needs an SDS Plus drill with a hammer-only or roto stop mode, typically found on 2kg class machines. Most contractor-grade SDS Plus drills in this weight class have that mode, but check before buying. Running this cutter in rotation mode will damage it and is not safe.
What masonry materials can this cut through?
It will cut brick, breeze block and concrete block up to 45 Newton hardness. That covers the vast majority of standard UK masonry construction. It is not designed for harder materials such as engineering brick, stone or dense aggregate block above the 45 Newton limit.
The cutter uses an SDS Plus shank, the standard drive system for rotary hammer drills in the 2 to 5kg class. The cutting blades are tipped with tungsten carbide, a wear-resistant material well suited to abrasive masonry applications. The rectangular profile produces a 154mm x 77mm recess, the standard dimension for a UK double back-box. Rated for use on materials up to 45 Newton compressive strength.
