Everbuild 506 PVA Bonding Agent is one of those products that earns its place on every job. As a pva bonding agent, primer, sealer, dust proofer and plaster admixture all in one bottle, it covers a range of tasks that would otherwise need separate products. Whether you are preparing a wall for plastering, priming a dusty or porous surface before painting, or mixing it into a sand and cement screed, the 506 does the job reliably. It fully conforms to BS 5270, so it meets the standard required for use in plastering applications.
The 5 litre size is the sensible choice for any job beyond a small patch repair. A full replaster of a room, a new screed, or a series of surfaces to prime will eat through a smaller bottle quickly. Five litres gives you enough to work with properly without rationing it, which is where mistakes happen.
Where Everbuild 506 PVA Bonding Agent Gets Used
On site, the 506 turns up at most stages of a build or renovation. Before plastering, diluted PVA is applied to the wall surface and left to go tacky. This gives the fresh plaster something to grip and reduces suction on highly porous backgrounds like old brick or blockwork, helping it to key properly rather than drying too fast and cracking. On very smooth or non-porous surfaces, it improves adhesion where plaster might otherwise struggle to bond.
As a sealer and dust proofer, it is brushed over flaking or powdery surfaces to consolidate them before painting or further treatment. Old limewash, chalky emulsion, and worn plasterwork all benefit from a diluted coat of PVA to stabilise them. It gives subsequent coats of paint or plaster a clean, sound substrate to work on rather than lifting existing loose material.
Using 506 as a Cement and Plaster Admixture
When mixed directly into sand and cement mortars or plaster mixes, Everbuild 506 improves workability, increases adhesion, and adds a degree of flexibility to the finished mix. This is particularly useful for floor screeds, repair mortars, and tile bed mixes where you want better bonding to the substrate and a slightly more durable result. The addition also helps reduce shrinkage cracking in thinner applications.
It adheres to most common building materials including brick, block, concrete, plasterboard, wood, cork, and textile-backed materials, provided at least one of the surfaces involved is porous. It is a water-based product, which makes it easy to thin with clean water to the required consistency for each application, and tools clean up with water too.
For trade use, the 506 is available in box quantities of four, which brings the unit cost down considerably on larger projects. At £7.95 for 5 litres, it is already competitively priced for a BS 5270 compliant pva bonding agent from a well-established trade brand.
Pro Tip: When using 506 as a bonding agent before plastering, apply it diluted and wait until it is just tacky before laying on your plaster coat. If it dries completely and goes shiny, it will actually reduce adhesion rather than improve it.
