Febond Blue Grit is a tried and trusted plaster bonding agent used by plasterers across the UK to get a proper key on surfaces that would otherwise reject a fresh coat of plaster. Smooth concrete, painted walls, ceramic tiles, existing plaster that’s been painted over — these are all backgrounds that’ll give you grief if you go straight in with a skim. Blue Grit solves that problem before it starts.
The product contains a fine aggregate that creates a mechanical key when applied. It’s not just a primer that soaks in and hopes for the best. The aggregate particles sit proud of the surface and give the plaster something to grip onto physically, which matters especially on non-porous or sealed backgrounds where suction is low or uneven.
Where Febond Blue Grit Gets Used
It’s particularly useful when you’re skimming onto painted surfaces or going over ceramic tiles, which have virtually no natural suction and would normally be a nightmare to get plaster to stick to. Concrete is another common application — formed concrete in particular can be very smooth and dense, and without a bonding agent you’re just asking for delamination further down the line.
The blue colouring is a simple but genuinely useful feature. It shows clearly where the product has been applied and where coverage is thin or missed. On a large wall or ceiling, that matters. No second-guessing, no coming back two days later wondering why a patch is blowing.
One Coat Application
Febond Blue Grit is a one-coat product, which keeps the prep stage quick. Brush or roll it on, let it become touch-dry and tacky, then plaster over it. The process is straightforward and fits into a normal working day without adding complexity to the job.
Available in 5 litre and 10 litre tubs, it suits everything from a single room skim to larger commercial or refurbishment contracts where you’re covering a lot of background in one visit. A 10 litre tub covers a reasonable area and is far more economical per square metre than buying in smaller quantities.
Pro Tip: Apply Febond Blue Grit and plaster onto it while it is still tacky rather than fully dry, if it goes hard and loses its tack it has gone past its window and you will need to re-coat.
