Aluminium oxide flap discs are the workhorse of any angle grinder setup. Whether you are stripping paint from steel, cleaning up welds, or keying a timber surface before finishing, these 115mm discs get through the work without fuss. The aluminium oxide abrasive cuts consistently across the full life of the disc, so you are not just burning through the top layer and then waiting for it to bite again.

These are Type 29 conical discs, which means the abrasive surface sits at a slight angle rather than flat. That profile concentrates the cutting action and makes them noticeably more aggressive than a flat Type 27 disc on the same grinder. For heavy stripping jobs, that matters. You cover more ground, faster, with less arm fatigue by the end of the day.

Where Aluminium Oxide Flap Discs Earn Their Keep

Paint removal from mild steel is the obvious one, but these discs are equally at home on rusty sections, rough timber, composite panels, and fibreglass. Fabricators use them to clean up weld seams before inspection. Site joiners reach for the finer grits when they want a smooth key without going through sandpaper by the handful. The 40 grit takes no prisoners on thick coatings; the 120 grit leaves a finish clean enough for most primer applications.

Choosing the Right Grit

40 grit is your starting point for heavy stock removal, thick paint, or anything with scale and rust. 60 grit takes over for general blending and medium prep work. 80 grit is a good all-rounder for timber and lighter metalwork. 120 grit is the finishing pass, refining surfaces before coating or leaving them presentable for inspection. Ordering a pack of 10 across a single grit keeps you consistent on a run of similar work, which is usually the smarter buy on site.

These discs fit any 115mm angle grinder with a standard 22.2mm arbour hole, so there is no hunting for adapters or wondering about compatibility.

Pro Tip: Run flap discs at a 10 to 15 degree angle to the workpiece rather than flat on, you will get a far more aggressive cut and the disc will last noticeably longer before the flaps wear back to the backing plate.
