The Index exterior carriage bolt is a through-fixing designed for timber structures that need to stay put in all weathers. Whether you are putting up fencing panels, building a pergola, laying decking subframes or fixing gate posts, this bolt delivers a secure, corrosion-resistant connection that won’t give you grief a few winters down the line. Each bolt is supplied with a matching nut and washer, so there’s no running back to the van before you can complete the fix.
The olive green coating is the key feature here. Index have engineered it to pass 500 hours of salt spray resistance testing, which is a meaningful standard for anything going in close to the coast, in ground contact, or exposed to persistent wet conditions. It’s not just a coat of paint — this is a coating formulated specifically for exterior structural use, and it sits well against pressure-treated timber without the galvanic issues you can sometimes get with standard zinc fixings and certain timber preservatives.
Where Index Exterior Carriage Bolts Are Used
The domed head profile of the Index exterior carriage bolt gives a clean finish on the face side of the timber. It’s a proper carriage bolt, so the square shank locks into the wood as you tighten, stopping the bolt from spinning while you run the nut up on the back. That detail matters when you’re working alone or in awkward positions. No one wants to hold a bolt still with one hand and reach around the back of a post with the other.
DIN Standards and Build Quality
The bolt conforms to DIN603 and the hexagon nut to DIN934, which gives you confidence in thread form, dimensional accuracy and load capacity. These are well-established European standards, not marketing fluff. Available in lengths from 100mm through to 220mm at 10mm diameter, there’s enough range to cover most structural timber joinery without needing to source anything special.
Sold in boxes of 10 or 1000, these suit both the one-off fence job and the contractor buying in bulk for a full landscaping project. The pricing at quantity is the kind of thing that makes a difference on larger jobs.
Pro Tip: When fitting through pressure-treated timber, pre-drill your clearance hole slightly oversize at around 11mm for a 10mm bolt, as the square shank needs to pull cleanly into the timber rather than fighting its way in and damaging the coating.
Index exterior carriage bolts are used across a wide range of outdoor timber construction work. Fencing contractors reach for them when fixing rails to posts, landscapers use them for raised bed framing and retaining structures, and groundworkers rely on them for gate posts and pergola connections. They're also found on roofing and cladding jobs where structural timber connections need a clean through-bolt finish on the visible face.
Anywhere timber meets timber outdoors and needs a secure, semi-permanent connection, this bolt does the job. The full nut-and-washer set means you're ready to fix straight from the box with no additional fasteners to source.

Not suitable for: Not intended for use in structural steel connections or load-bearing applications beyond standard timber joinery. Not suitable for submerged or permanently waterlogged conditions where a stainless steel fixing would be more appropriate.
Mark and pre-drill a clearance hole through both timber members before fitting. A hole slightly larger than the bolt shank, around 10.5 to 11mm, allows the square shoulder to pull cleanly into the timber face when the nut is tightened rather than tearing the coating as it goes in.
Insert the bolt from the face side, ensuring the domed head sits flush against the timber. Fit the washer and nut to the back and tighten using a spanner or socket. The square shank will lock into the timber as tension increases, preventing rotation. Avoid over-tightening to the point of crushing the timber fibres, particularly in softwoods.
Clamp or hold the timber members in their final position before drilling
Pre-drill a clearance hole of approximately 10.5 to 11mm through both timbers
Insert the bolt from the face side with the domed head sitting flat against the timber surface
Fit the washer over the threaded end on the reverse side
Thread the nut on by hand to start
Tighten with a spanner or socket until the square shank locks and the nut bears firmly on the washer
Check the connection is square and the bolt head is fully seated before completing the tightening
Are these bolts suitable for use with pressure-treated timber?
Yes. The olive green coating is designed for exterior use including contact with common timber preservatives. For particularly aggressive treatment types such as creosote or certain copper-based preservatives, it's worth checking compatibility, but for standard CCA and TANALITH-treated softwood these are a well-suited fixing.
Do I need to buy nuts and washers separately?
No. Each Index exterior carriage bolt is supplied as a complete set with a hexagon nut and washer included. You have everything needed to complete the connection straight from the box.
What is the difference between the box of 10 and box of 1000 options?
The product is the same either way. The box of 10 suits smaller one-off jobs or topping up stock, while the box of 1000 is aimed at contractors and landscapers working at volume who want significantly better unit pricing across a project.
The Index exterior carriage bolt is manufactured to DIN603 with a domed head and integral square shank beneath the head for anti-rotation in timber. The hexagon nut conforms to DIN934. The olive green coating provides a minimum of 500 hours salt spray resistance in accordance with standard corrosion testing, making it suitable for outdoor structural use in exposed and coastal environments.
