The Toolpak mortar raking diamond blade is purpose-built for one job: cutting out old, perished or damaged mortar joints ready for re-pointing. It fits standard 115mm and 125mm angle grinders and does what a chisel and hammer does, only faster and with a consistent joint width every time. If you’ve ever spent a morning on your knees chiselling out mortar by hand, you’ll know why these blades exist.
The 6.4mm wide diamond segments are wider than a standard cutting blade, which matters because mortar joints need a clean, square channel for the new pointing to key into properly. Too narrow and the fresh mortar has nothing to grip. This blade cuts the right width in a single pass, which keeps the job moving and reduces the risk of disturbing the surrounding brickwork.
Where the Toolpak Mortar Raking Diamond Blade Earns Its Keep
Re-pointing is one of those jobs that looks simple but goes wrong quickly if the preparation is poor. Loose or crumbling mortar that hasn’t been fully removed will undermine new pointing within a season or two. Using a dedicated mortar raking blade takes the inconsistency out of the prep stage. You get a uniform depth, a clean face on either side of the joint, and none of the accidental brick damage that comes with heavy-handed chisel work.
The steel body is 3.5mm thick, which gives the blade enough rigidity to track straight along the joint without flexing into the brick face. Thin-bodied blades can wander, particularly on longer horizontal runs or when the grinder operator isn’t perfectly steady. A bit of body thickness goes a long way on a job like this.
A Sensible Choice for Routine Re-Pointing Work
At this price point, the Toolpak mortar raking diamond blade represents straightforward value for trade use. It’s not a blade you’d reach for on a heritage stonework project where every mm counts, but for standard brick and block re-pointing on residential and commercial buildings it handles the task without fuss. The 22mm bore fits the standard arbor on most angle grinders used on UK sites, so there’s no adapter faff to deal with.
Available in 115mm and 125mm to suit your grinder, with one blade per pack.
Pro Tip: Run the blade dry and keep the grinder moving steadily along the joint rather than dwelling in one spot, as heat build-up from stopping is what kills diamond segments prematurely.
