Galvanised nail plates are one of those items that sit quietly in the background of a timber frame or roof structure, doing an enormous amount of work without anyone noticing. Which is exactly how it should be. These perforated steel plates are used to connect, repair or reinforce timber members where a simple butt joint or screw fixing would not provide enough strength. If you work with stud walls, roof timbers, floor joists or any structural timber framework, you will reach for nail plates regularly.
Each plate is pressed from pre-galvanised steel, giving reliable corrosion resistance for use in internal and external structural applications. The galvanised finish means these are suitable wherever moisture is a concern, from open roof structures to outdoor timber repairs. Five sizes are available, from the compact 42 x 178mm plate through to the full 178 x 338mm option, so you can match the plate to the load and joint without overcomplicating things.
What Makes These Galvanised Nail Plates Worth Using
The detail that makes these plates genuinely useful on site is in the hole pressing. Every hole is countersunk, which does two things: it locates the nail correctly before you drive it, and it pulls the nail head flush with the plate surface once driven home. No proud heads catching on anything, no gaps between plate and timber. The strengthening ribs pressed into the plate body add rigidity across the span of the plate, which matters when you are loading a joint in any direction other than straight compression.
CE approval means these nail plates meet the relevant structural standards, which is worth noting if you are working on a project where building control sign-off is required. Structural metalwork that carries a CE mark takes one variable out of the conversation.
At under 40p each, these are the kind of fixing you buy in quantity and keep on the van. Running out of nail plates mid-frame is a particular type of frustration nobody needs. Available in five sizes to cover most common timber repair and connection requirements.
Pro Tip: When repairing a split or damaged joist, fit nail plates to both faces of the timber rather than one side only, as this distributes the load evenly and prevents the joint from rolling under load.
Galvanised nail plates are used wherever two timber members need to be connected, lapped or repaired without the bulk of a traditional bracket. Common applications include truss repairs, stud wall connections, joist splices, ridge board joins and general timber frame assembly. Roofers use them for purlin and rafter repairs, carpenters reach for them during first fix, and groundworkers find them useful for timber shuttering repairs where a quick structural fix is needed without a trip to the merchant.
Best For
- Connecting timber members
- Repairing split or damaged joists
- Roof truss repairs
- Stud wall framing
- Timber splicing and lapping
Available Sizes
- 42 x 178mm
- 85 x 178mm
- 104 x 154mm
- 169 x 178mm
- 178 x 338mm
Key Features
- Pre-galvanised steel construction
- CE approved
- Countersunk holes for flush nail location
- Pressed strengthening ribs for rigidity
- Suitable for internal and external use
Not suitable for: Not suitable as a replacement for engineered connector plates in new-build truss manufacture, where manufacturer-specific pressed metal plates are required. Not intended for use with masonry or concrete.
Position the nail plate across the joint or repair, centred over both timber members. The countersunk holes will guide your nails into position before you drive them, so there is no need to mark or pre-drill. Drive round wire nails through each hole until the heads sit flush with the plate surface. For structural repairs, fit a plate to both faces of the timber where access allows.
- Select the appropriate plate size for the joint or repair, ensuring the plate spans well onto both timber members
- Position the plate centrally over the joint, keeping it square to the timber grain
- Hold the plate firm and start a nail in one of the corner holes to fix the plate in place before driving the rest
- Work across the plate driving nails through each countersunk hole until all heads sit flush
- Where access permits, fit a second plate to the opposite face of the joint for a balanced repair
What size nail should I use with these nail plates?
Round wire nails are the standard choice. A 30mm to 40mm nail works well for most plate thicknesses and timber sizes, giving enough penetration into the timber without breaking through the other side on thinner sections. The countersunk holes are sized to accept standard round wire nail heads.
Are these nail plates suitable for outdoor or exposed timber repairs?
Yes. The pre-galvanised finish provides good corrosion resistance, making them suitable for external use and situations where moisture is present, such as open roof structures, outbuildings or treated timber repairs. For highly aggressive environments, such as coastal locations or chemical exposure, a stainless steel plate would be a better choice.
Manufactured from pre-galvanised steel with a zinc coating applied before pressing, these nail plates retain corrosion protection at the cut and formed edges. The perforation pattern is pressed with countersunk profiles to provide positive nail location and a flush finish once driven. Strengthening ribs are formed into the plate body during pressing to increase rigidity across the span. CE approved for structural timber connection applications.
