Brick reinforcement mesh in coil form is one of those products that quietly does a serious job. Laid into mortar beds as you build, this stainless steel A2 reinforcing coil distributes load across the wall, tying courses together and significantly reducing the risk of cracking over time. It’s used in standard brickwork and blockwork construction, and it’s especially important in situations where conditions are harsh.

This coil is manufactured from A2 stainless steel, which puts it in a different category to the basic galvanised versions you’ll find on general builders’ merchants’ shelves. Galvanised coil is fine in many applications, but it has limits. Where moisture ingress is likely, where the build is exposed to a corrosive atmosphere, or where the masonry itself introduces corrosive elements, galvanised steel will eventually let you down. A2 stainless won’t. It resists corrosion over the long term without the coating degrading, which matters when the product is buried inside a wall you’re not opening up again for decades.

Where Brick Reinforcing Coil Is Used

Green Oak is a classic example of why the stainless grade matters. The tannins in freshly cut oak are aggressive enough to corrode standard fixings and metalwork relatively quickly, so anything going in alongside it needs to be genuinely corrosion resistant. The same logic applies to builds near coastal areas, industrial environments, or anywhere with elevated moisture levels. If you’re building a retaining wall, garden wall, or any external structure that’s going to be regularly wetted and dried, stainless is the sensible specification.

Available in 100mm and 63mm widths to suit different wall constructions, the coil format makes it easy to cut to length on site and bed into the mortar joint without awkward handling. There’s no faff with rigid sheets, and you won’t be chasing off-cuts around the site.

Pro Tip: When laying the coil into a mortar bed, make sure the joint is full and the coil is properly embedded with at least 10mm of mortar cover on each side, a dry or thin joint leaves the coil unsupported and defeats the purpose.
