Standard 12m x 12mm PTFE tape for sealing threaded water fittings. Wraps around pipe threads to prevent leaks on compression joints, taps, and fittings. A basic that earns its place in every plumber’s bag.
PTFE tape is one of those products that costs almost nothing and saves a fortune in callbacks. This 12m x 12mm roll is the standard size used on water systems throughout the UK, designed to seal threaded pipe connections and stop leaks before they start. Wrap it around male threads before assembly and it fills the microscopic gaps between metal surfaces that would otherwise let water find its way through. Simple, reliable, and used by plumbers every day of the working week.
The 12mm width is the right fit for the majority of domestic and light commercial water connections. It seats cleanly on 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch BSP threads without bunching or overhanging, which keeps the joint tidy and makes assembly straightforward. At 12 metres per roll, there is enough on a single roll to complete a good number of joints before you need a replacement.
Where PTFE Tape Gets Used on Site
PTFE tape works on threaded fittings across a wide range of water system applications. It is used on compression joints, ball valves, radiator valves, tap connectors, flexible hoses, and isolation valves. Anywhere two threaded components need to mate cleanly and hold water, PTFE tape sits between them doing its job without fuss.
The tape works by deforming slightly under the pressure of assembly. As the threads tighten, the PTFE compresses into the thread profile and creates a seal that holds against normal water system pressures. It does not harden or cure, which means it stays slightly pliable and can accommodate minor movement in the joint over time.
Fitting Type Compatibility
This roll is sized for standard water fittings. It suits brass, chrome, and stainless steel threaded connections as well as plastic fittings used on push-fit and compression systems. The tape bonds to itself during wrapping, so it stays in place while you make up the joint and does not slip or unwind mid-assembly.
At this price point, it makes sense to keep a handful of rolls in the van at all times. There is nothing worse than being on a job, needing PTFE tape, and finding the last roll is down to its final few centimetres. Keep a stock and it will never be the thing that slows you down.
PTFE tape for water systems is distinct from gas-rated PTFE tape, which is typically yellow and made to a higher specification. This white tape is intended for water applications only and should not be used on gas pipework.
Pro Tip: Always wrap PTFE tape in the same direction as the thread rotation so it tightens into the thread as you assemble the fitting rather than unwinding when you turn it.
