The Stainless Steel Wire Wall Tie Type 2 is a standard cavity wall tie used in residential and housing construction throughout the UK. Made from stainless steel wire, these ties resist corrosion over the long term, making them a reliable choice where durability matters and where a replacement programme is the last thing anyone wants to think about. Available in 225mm, 250mm, and 275mm lengths to suit different cavity widths, and sold in packs of 250 to keep larger jobs moving without constant reordering.
Type 2 wall ties are specified for most standard housing applications. They sit within BS EN 845-1, which covers masonry ancillary components, and are suitable for use in cavities up to around 150mm depending on the length selected. The wire form allows mortar to bed around the tie naturally during laying, which helps with both stability and moisture drainage across the cavity. The drip feature on the tie prevents water from tracking across to the inner leaf, which is exactly what you want in an exposed or wet climate.
Where Stainless Steel Housing Wall Ties Type 2 Are Used
These ties are used during the construction of cavity walls in housing, residential developments, and similar low-rise building projects. A bricklayer beds the tie into the mortar joint as the courses are laid, tying the outer leaf of masonry to the inner leaf or blockwork. The stainless steel construction means no worrying about long-term corrosion failure, which has caused significant problems with older galvanised or black iron ties in properties built decades ago.
The three available lengths cover the most common cavity widths found in standard housebuilding. At 225mm, the tie suits narrower cavities typically found in older or more compact construction. The 275mm option accommodates wider cavities that include insulation boards, which is increasingly common in modern builds chasing better thermal performance. The 250mm sits in between and is probably the most commonly specified of the three for typical two-leaf cavity construction.
Specifying the Right Length
Wall tie length is determined by the cavity width plus the embedment required in each leaf. A minimum embedment of 50mm into each leaf is standard practice. So for a 75mm cavity with two masonry leaves, a 225mm tie would be appropriate. Always check the structural engineer’s specification or the architect’s drawing before ordering, particularly on anything other than straightforward housing. Getting the wrong length on a large order is the kind of thing that ruins a Monday morning.
Stainless steel wire wall ties of this type offer a significant service life advantage over alternatives and are the expected choice on most modern housing schemes. These ties are sold in packs of 250, which is enough to keep a two-man bricklaying team working without interruption across a full day or more, depending on the build.
Pro Tip: Always check that the tie length gives at least 50mm embedment into each masonry leaf after accounting for the full cavity width, including any insulation boards, as under-embedded ties will not pass inspection.
