Stainless steel wall ties are a core fixing in cavity wall construction, connecting the inner and outer masonry leaves to create a structurally sound and weather-resistant wall. These Type 4 wall ties are manufactured from stainless steel, giving them long-term resistance to corrosion in the damp environment that sits inside a cavity wall. They are available in four lengths: 200mm, 225mm, 250mm and 275mm, making them suitable for a range of cavity widths from standard to wider-cavity insulated builds.

Type 4 wall ties are the most commonly specified tie for general masonry cavity wall construction in the UK. They meet the requirements for use in moderate and severe exposure zones, which covers the vast majority of domestic and commercial projects. The butterfly or double-triangle profile typical of Type 4 ties provides reliable load transfer between leaves while allowing water drip-off, so moisture does not bridge the cavity and reach the inner skin.

Choosing the Right Length of Stainless Steel Wall Tie

Getting the tie length right matters. A wall tie needs to embed a minimum of 50mm into each masonry leaf, with at least 25mm of clear space between the end of the tie and the face of the mortar bed. On a standard 100mm block inner leaf and 102mm brick outer leaf with a 100mm cavity, a 250mm tie is typically the correct choice. Tighter cavities or partial-fill insulation boards can shift that requirement, so always check your cavity width and insulation thickness before ordering. The four lengths available here cover the most common cavity configurations you will encounter on site.

Why Stainless Steel Matters Here

Wall ties live in one of the more unforgiving environments in a building: permanently enclosed, often damp, subject to temperature cycling, and impossible to inspect or replace without significant remedial work. Mild steel ties corrode, expand as they rust, and can crack the mortar bed or spall the masonry face over time. Stainless steel ties do not have that problem. They are the standard specification for new build work and for replacement tie projects where corroded original ties are being drilled and resin-fixed.

Each box contains 250 ties, which is a practical quantity for a working bricklaying gang. At the standard tie spacing of 900mm horizontally and every 450mm vertically, a box of 250 stainless steel wall ties will cover a meaningful run of walling without leaving you short mid-lift. The box quantity also makes it straightforward to order by the number of boxes per house type if you are working to a bill of quantities.

These ties are appropriate for use in new-build cavity wall construction, extensions, and retaining wall leaf connections where the specification calls for a Type 4 stainless steel wall tie.

Pro Tip: Always install wall ties with a slight downward slope toward the outer leaf so any moisture that tracks along the tie drains away from the inner skin rather than bridging the cavity.
