CT1 BW1 is a one-part waterproofing and tanking solution for bathrooms, wet rooms and showers. No priming, no mixing, no joint tapes required. Compatible with concrete, plasterboard, timber, fibre cement board and more.
CT1 BW1 tanking solution is a one-part, ready-to-use waterproofing system built on CT1’s TRIBRID® Technology. It is designed for professional installation in bathrooms, wet rooms, shower enclosures and similar high-moisture environments where a reliable, long-lasting waterproof membrane is essential. The advanced polymer formulation bonds directly to most construction substrates without priming, which saves a significant amount of time on site.
Most tanking systems ask you to tape joints, cut corner pieces, apply primer, wait for it to dry, then apply the membrane. BW1 cuts through that process. There are no joint tapes required and no fiddly corner pieces to fit. You apply BW1 directly from the tub, work it across the surface, and the material bonds and flexes with the substrate beneath it. For anyone who has spent time wrestling with traditional tanking kit in a tight shower enclosure, that is a meaningful improvement.
Where CT1 BW1 Tanking Solution Gets Used
BW1 is formulated for both domestic and commercial projects. It performs equally well in a single domestic shower refurbishment or a large-scale wet room installation across multiple units. Because it is compatible with such a wide range of substrates, specifiers and installers do not need to check substrate-by-substrate whether a different product is required. It works across concrete, brick, timber, plasterboard, fibre cement board and foam backer board, which covers the vast majority of build-ups used in modern wet area construction.
The material is VOC and solvent free, which matters in confined spaces where ventilation is limited. Bathrooms and wet rooms rarely have ideal airflow during installation, so a product that does not off-gas solvents makes the working environment more comfortable and reduces the need for forced ventilation on smaller jobs.
Performance and Coverage
BW1 offers a coverage rate of up to 2 square metres per litre, which makes the 5kg tub a practical size for most domestic bathrooms and medium-sized wet rooms. The one-part formulation means there is no measuring, no mixing and no waste from incorrectly proportioned batches. You open the tub and start work. The built-in anti-bacterial properties are a useful addition in an environment where mould and microbial growth are a constant concern, particularly behind tiling where moisture can sit unseen for long periods.
BW1 tanking solution is compatible with most tile adhesives and grouts applied over the cured membrane, making it a straightforward inclusion in a standard tiling specification. The flexibility of the cured material means it can accommodate minor structural movement without cracking, which is especially useful in timber-framed constructions where some degree of flex is normal.
The 5kg tub is well suited to trade use. It stores cleanly, reseals between coats, and the ready-to-use format means there is nothing to prepare before you start. On a busy fit-out where time is money, that counts.
Pro Tip: Apply BW1 in two coats, working the second coat perpendicular to the first, and pay particular attention to the floor-to-wall junctions where water pressure is highest during use.
CT1 BW1 is used primarily by bathroom installers, wet room specialists, tilers and general builders working on any project where a waterproof membrane is required beneath tiling or surface finishes. It is applied in shower enclosures, wet rooms, bathrooms, utility rooms and any internal area subject to regular water exposure. The product suits both new-build wet area construction and refurbishment work where existing substrates are being prepared for new finishes.
BW1 is also appropriate for commercial applications including hotel bathrooms, gym changing rooms, sports facilities and healthcare environments where hygienic, anti-bacterial waterproofing is part of the specification. Its broad substrate compatibility means it can be used on concrete screeds, blockwork, timber floors and wall linings without the need for multiple products across one project.

Not suitable for: BW1 is not intended for external or below-ground waterproofing applications. It is formulated for internal wet areas and should not be used as a substitute for structural waterproofing systems in basements or below-DPC environments.
CT1 BW1 is applied directly from the tub using a brush, roller or trowel onto a clean, dry, dust-free substrate. No primer is required before application. Work the first coat evenly across the surface, paying close attention to floor-to-wall joints and internal corners where water tends to concentrate.
Allow the first coat to cure fully before applying the second coat in a perpendicular direction to the first. This cross-coat method ensures consistent coverage and eliminates thin spots that could compromise the membrane. Once both coats have cured, the surface is ready to receive tile adhesive and tiling in the normal way.
Ensure the substrate is clean, sound, dry and free from dust, grease and loose material.
Check that the substrate is compatible with BW1 — concrete, brick, timber, plasterboard, fibre cement board and foam backer board are all suitable.
Open the tub and stir lightly if any settlement has occurred during storage.
Apply the first coat using a brush, roller or trowel, working the material evenly across the full surface area.
Pay particular attention to floor-to-wall junctions and internal corners, building up slightly more material in these areas.
Allow the first coat to cure fully before proceeding.
Apply the second coat in a direction perpendicular to the first coat to ensure even coverage across the membrane.
Allow the second coat to cure completely before tiling over the surface using a suitable tile adhesive.
Does BW1 require a primer before application?
No. CT1 BW1 is formulated to bond directly to most construction substrates without a primer. This includes concrete, plasterboard, timber, fibre cement board and foam backer board, which removes a preparation step and speeds up the overall installation.
How many coats of BW1 are needed and how long does each coat take to cure?
Two coats are required for a complete waterproof membrane. Cure time between coats will depend on ambient temperature and humidity, but as a general guide allow each coat to fully dry and lose its wet appearance before applying the next. Always follow CT1's current technical data for specific cure times.
How much coverage does a 5kg tub of BW1 provide?
BW1 covers up to 2 square metres per litre. A 5kg tub provides approximately 5 litres of product, giving a theoretical coverage of around 10 square metres per coat. For a two-coat system, a 5kg tub will cover roughly 5 square metres of finished membrane area, which suits most standard domestic bathrooms and shower enclosures.
Can BW1 be tiled over directly once cured?
Yes. Once both coats of BW1 have fully cured, the membrane is compatible with standard tile adhesives and grouts. No additional preparation is required before tiling. Check that the tile adhesive you are using is suitable for wet area applications.
CT1 BW1 is formulated using TRIBRID® Technology, which combines polymer chemistry to deliver a flexible, adhesive-grade waterproof membrane in a single-component system. The cured film is solvent free and VOC free, making it safe for use in enclosed spaces. The anti-bacterial properties are built into the formulation rather than added as a surface treatment, providing ongoing protection against microbial growth within the membrane layer. The product is supplied ready to use with no mixing or dilution required.
