Hip Iron – Hot Dipped Galvanised 300 x 3mm – Box 10

Scrolled galvanised hip irons for bedding and restraining hip tiles on pitched roofs. Hot dipped for long-term weather resistance. A traditional fixing that does exactly what it needs to.
A galvanised hip iron is one of those fittings that most people walk past on a finished roof without a second thought — which is exactly how it should be. Fixed at the foot of a hip rafter, it provides a mechanical restraint for the bottom hip tile, stopping it from slipping or lifting when the mortar bed inevitably ages and softens. These are hot dipped galvanised, which gives a far thicker zinc coating than electro-galvanised alternatives and holds up properly in exposed roofing conditions over the long term.
This particular iron is 300mm in length with a 3mm thickness — a standard size that suits most traditional pitched roof details. The scrolled end sits neatly beneath the hip tile and provides the bearing surface that keeps everything in place. They’re used on clay and concrete hip tiles alike, and you’ll find them called for on new builds, refurbishments and re-roofing jobs across the country.
Where Galvanised Hip Irons Get Used
Roofers reach for hip irons whenever a pitched roof has a hipped end, which covers a huge range of domestic and commercial work. They are fixed through the fascia or into the end of the hip rafter before the hip tile is bedded, so they need to be in place and secure before the mortar goes down. Getting that sequence right is what separates a tidy hip detail from one that shifts six months after handover.
Hot dipped galvanising is the right choice here because roofing is a tough environment. Thermal movement, driving rain, and decades of exposure would make short work of a lighter finish. The coating on these holds up where a spray or plated finish simply wouldn’t last.
Sold in a box of 10, these suit a single roof job or can be kept as regular stock for roofing gangs who deal with hipped roofs regularly. At this price point, there’s no reason to be caught short on site.
Pro Tip: Bed the hip iron firmly against the rafter before fixing so it cannot pivot under load — a loose iron will let the tile rock even when the mortar looks solid.
Hip irons are used on any pitched roof with a hipped end, from standard domestic extensions through to larger traditional roof structures. They sit at the foot of the hip rafter, bedded in with the lowest hip tile to provide a fixed restraint point. Roofers use them on new builds, full re-roofs and tile replacement jobs wherever the existing irons have corroded or gone missing entirely.
Best For
- Restraining hip tiles at the foot of a hip rafter
- New build pitched roofing
- Re-roofing and refurbishment work
- Clay and concrete hip tiles
Works With
- Standard hip rafters
- Mortar-bedded hip tile details
- Timber fascia boards
- Most traditional pitched roof constructions
Key Features
- Hot dipped galvanised finish for long-term weather resistance
- 300mm length suits standard hip tile details
- 3mm thickness provides solid, stable restraint
- Scrolled end for tile bearing surface
- Box of 10
Not suitable for: Not suitable for use as a structural fixing or load-bearing bracket. These are tile restraints only, not a replacement for correct hip rafter construction.
Fix the hip iron to the hip rafter or fascia before any tiling begins. Position it so the scrolled end will sit flush beneath the bottom hip tile once bedded. Pre-drill if fixing into hardwood to avoid splitting.
Once the iron is secure, bed the hip tile in mortar as normal. The scroll should bear against the underside of the tile and prevent forward movement. Check alignment before the mortar sets — repositioning afterwards is a nuisance.
- Position the hip iron at the foot of the hip rafter, ensuring the scroll faces outward to bear against the tile
- Mark and pre-drill fixing holes if going into hardwood or dense timber
- Fix the iron firmly using appropriate screws or nails through the fixing holes
- Check the iron cannot pivot or lift before proceeding
- Bed the bottom hip tile in mortar as per standard practice
- Ensure the scrolled end is in contact with the underside of the hip tile
- Allow mortar to set before loading the remaining hip tiles above
What is the difference between hot dipped galvanised and electro-galvanised hip irons?
Hot dipped galvanising involves immersing the iron in molten zinc, which produces a much thicker and more durable coating than electro-galvanising. For roofing applications where the fitting is exposed to rain and temperature changes year-round, hot dipped is the correct choice. Electro-galvanised finishes are thinner and will corrode faster in exposed conditions.
Will a 300mm hip iron suit my roof?
300mm is the most common size for standard residential pitched roofs and will suit the majority of hip tile details. If you are working on a particularly deep tile profile or an unusual rafter detail, measure the bearing length required before ordering. Some older properties or specialist tiles may need a longer iron.
Do I need one hip iron per hip or more?
One hip iron is fitted at the foot of each hip, so a standard four-hipped roof requires four irons in total. If the roof has additional valleys or complex geometry with multiple hips, count each hip end separately. A box of 10 covers most domestic jobs with a few spares, which is never a bad position to be in.
Manufactured from mild steel strip with a hot dipped galvanised finish applied after forming. The scrolled profile is pressed to provide a bearing surface for the hip tile. At 3mm thickness and 300mm in length, these conform to standard specifications for hip tile restraint in UK residential roofing practice. The hot dip process ensures consistent zinc coverage including at edges and formed sections where corrosion typically starts first.
