Sherardised panel pins are a staple in any carpenter’s or joiner’s kit. The sherardising process gives each pin a zinc-rich coating that bonds at the molecular level — offering far better corrosion resistance than a standard bright steel pin of equivalent size. If you’re fixing timber mouldings, architrave, skirting, or any interior trim where you’d rather not see rust bleed through a painted surface six months later, these are worth the small step up from uncoated alternatives.
Available in four sizes — 25 x 1.60mm, 30 x 1.60mm, 40 x 1.60mm, and 50 x 2.00mm — there’s enough range here to cover most first and second fix timber trim scenarios. The 25mm and 30mm sizes handle lighter mouldings and beadings with minimal splitting risk. The 40mm and 50mm pins carry more holding power for thicker boards and heavier sections where a shorter pin just won’t do the job properly.
Why Sherardised Panel Pins Hold Up Better
Sherardising involves tumbling steel pins in zinc dust at high temperature, which diffuses zinc into the surface of the steel itself. It’s not a coating that chips or flakes like galvanising can. The result is a pin with good surface hardness and reasonable corrosion resistance — particularly useful in environments with variable humidity, such as conservatories, bathrooms, or any application close to external walls. They’re not a replacement for stainless steel in genuinely wet conditions, but for most interior joinery they’ll outlast a bright pin considerably.
Supplied in a choice of carton or TIMbag format, in either 0.5kg or 25kg quantities. The 25kg option suits ongoing trade use where running out mid-job is a very irritating way to lose an hour. The 0.5kg pack is fine if you need a specific size to fill a gap in your stock without committing to a full bulk order.
Pro Tip: When punching sherardised panel pins below the surface, use a proper nail punch sized just under the pin head to avoid spreading the zinc coating and creating a rust point — even on interior work it matters if you're painting over.
