Select the appropriate size for your material thickness. As a rough guide, the pin should be long enough to penetrate the substrate by at least two thirds of its length for a secure hold. Pre-drilling is rarely needed for softwoods, but on hardwood beading it can prevent splitting near the ends.
Drive the pin in with a pin hammer or lightweight joiner's hammer, leaving the head just proud of the surface. Use a nail punch to set it below the surface cleanly. Fill the resulting hole with wood filler appropriate to your finish, sand flush once dry, and paint or varnish as normal.
Select the correct pin size for the timber thickness you are working with

No. Bright steel has no protective coating, so it will rust when exposed to moisture. For exterior applications you would need stainless steel or galvanised pins instead.
