Galvanised square plate washers are the go-to fixing component when a standard round washer simply isn’t doing enough to hold things together. Where a bolt or coach screw is pulling through soft or engineered timber, the large 50x50mm face of these plate washers distributes that load across a far greater surface area, keeping the connection solid without the fastener sinking in or working loose over time.
These are hot dipped galvanised, not electroplated. That matters. The hot dip process gives a thicker, more durable zinc coating that genuinely stands up to outdoor exposure, whether that’s a fence panel, a timber frame outbuilding, or ground-level structural work where moisture is a constant. Electroplated washers go rusty quickly in those conditions. These won’t give you that problem.
Where Galvanised Square Plate Washers Earn Their Keep
You’ll see these used heavily in timber frame construction, fencing, gate hanging, decking subframes, and agricultural buildings. They’re commonly used with M10 and M12 coach bolts or threaded rod to clamp timbers together or to anchor sole plates and posts. The square profile also helps in situations where you need the washer to sit across a joint or overlap two members, something a round washer can’t always do neatly.
The 3mm thickness gives enough rigidity that the washer won’t deform under torque. Tighten an M12 nut down hard onto one of these and it stays flat, spreads the load, and holds its shape. Compare that to thin-stamped washers and you’ll notice the difference immediately.
Pack Size and Practical Value
Both M10 and M12 sizes come in boxes of 100, which is a sensible quantity for any structural job or ongoing site supply. Running out of plate washers mid-frame is the kind of thing that adds an hour to your day for no good reason. Having a box on the van covers most jobs without thinking about it.
Pro Tip: When using these with threaded rod, add a second plate washer to the opposite side of the timber so both faces are protected from pull-through, not just the nut side.
Square plate washers are used wherever a bolted connection needs load to be distributed across a wider area than a standard round washer provides. Typical applications include timber frame connections, fence post bolting, gate hardware, decking subframe assembly, agricultural buildings, and anchoring timber sole plates to concrete. They work with coach bolts, hex bolts, and threaded rod in M10 and M12 diameters.
The hot dipped galvanised coating makes these appropriate for external and semi-exposed environments, including fencing, outbuildings, and landscaping structures where ongoing contact with moisture and weather is expected.

Key Specifications
- Face size: 50 x 50mm
- Thickness: 3mm
- Sizes: M10 and M12
- Finish: Hot dipped galvanised
- Pack quantity: 100 per box
Not suitable for: Not suitable for use with stainless steel fixings in corrosive or marine environments where a matching stainless washer would be required. Not intended for use in structural load-bearing connections where engineer-specified hardware is required.
Fit the plate washer over the bolt shank before threading on the nut. Ensure the washer sits flat against the timber face with no rocking. Tighten progressively rather than fully in one go, particularly when clamping across a joint, to allow even load distribution across the 50x50mm face.
For through-bolt applications in timber, use a plate washer on both sides of the connection to prevent pull-through on either face. Check alignment before final tightening as the square profile will show up any skew in the connection.
- Select the correct size: M10 washer for M10 fixings, M12 for M12 fixings
- Thread the bolt or rod through the timber or material being fixed
- Slide the plate washer over the protruding shank, flat face against the timber
- Add a second washer to the opposite face for through-bolt applications
- Thread on the nut by hand until it contacts the washer face
- Tighten progressively using a spanner or socket, checking the washer remains flat and square
- Re-check torque after the initial load has settled, particularly on green or unseasoned timber
What is the difference between hot dipped galvanised and BZP washers?
BZP (bright zinc plated) has a thinner electroplated zinc coating that works fine indoors or in dry conditions. Hot dipped galvanised gives a heavier, more durable coating that holds up properly in outdoor and exposed environments. For external timber work, fencing, or anything that sees rain regularly, hot dipped galvanised is the right choice.
Can I use these with stainless steel bolts?
Technically yes for most general applications, but mixing galvanised and stainless steel hardware in wet or marine environments can accelerate corrosion through galvanic reaction. In those conditions, it is better to use a matching stainless washer. For standard outdoor timber work in a normal UK climate, mixing the two is generally not a problem.
Do these come in other sizes beyond 50x50mm?
The sizes listed here are M10 and M12 in the 50x50x3mm plate. If you need a different plate size or bolt diameter, get in touch with the team at Discount Trade Supplies and we can check what else is available.
These square plate washers are manufactured from mild steel and finished by hot dip galvanising, which provides a zinc coating significantly thicker than electroplated alternatives. The 50x50mm bearing face and 3mm body thickness are suited to timber and structural connections where load spreading is a functional requirement rather than an afterthought. The hot dip process gives consistent coverage across all faces and edges of the washer.
