A drive in post spike is one of those genuinely useful bits of kit that makes a day’s fencing work considerably less miserable. No digging, no mixing concrete, no waiting for anything to set. You drive the spike into the ground, drop the post in, and you’re moving on to the next one. This Quick Fit version takes that a step further with inverted fins inside the post holder that grip the post in place without bolts or screws, which is exactly what you want when you’re putting up a run of fence panels and you’d rather not lose an afternoon to fiddling with fixings.
The spike itself uses a four-fin steel design that bites into the ground as it goes in, spreading the load and resisting lateral movement. Once it’s properly seated, the post isn’t going anywhere in normal ground conditions. The fins distribute pressure around the spike shaft rather than concentrating it in one place, which gives a more stable result than a plain round or square stake would achieve at the same depth.
One practical advantage that doesn’t always get mentioned is that the post base sits above ground level inside the holder. Timber posts that sit directly in soil or concrete are far more likely to rot at the base, often within a few years, because moisture gets trapped right where it can do the most damage. With a post spike, the timber is held clear of the ground and gets airflow around it, which significantly extends the working life of the post. That matters if you’re fitting close-boarded fencing or similar that you expect to last.
Where Drive In Post Spikes Work Best
These spikes suit most domestic and light commercial fencing jobs. Garden fencing, driveway posts, pergola uprights, and similar applications are all well within scope. The red oxide powder coat is designed to sit in with the surrounding fencing rather than stand out, and it provides a decent baseline of rust protection. If you want a specific colour match or need longer-term protection, the coating will take paint without any particular prep beyond a quick clean.
Choosing the Right Size
These spikes are available in several sizes to suit different post sections and ground depths. The 75mm holder variants suit standard 3-inch posts and are fine for most garden boundary fencing. The 100mm versions handle heavier 4-inch posts where you need more stability, particularly for taller panels or exposed sites. Deeper spikes, such as the 750mm length, give better performance in softer or looser ground where a shallower spike might work loose over time. If in doubt, go longer rather than shorter — it’s much easier to drive a spike a bit deeper than to pull one out and start again once a post is in.
Each spike is sold individually, so you can order exactly the quantity you need for the job. Available in 75 x 450mm, 75 x 600mm, 75 x 750mm, 100 x 600mm, and 100 x 750mm to suit both post size and site conditions.
Pro Tip: Use a proper post knocker or a driving tool insert rather than hammering directly onto the spike cup — striking the cup directly will deform it and the post will never sit square.
