Not suitable for: Not suitable for environments containing oxygen-deficient atmospheres or gases and vapours, where a full face-fit respirator with the appropriate filter cartridge is required. These are disposable filtering half masks and should not be cleaned and reused.
Unfold the mask from its polybag and hold it so the nose clip sits at the top. Cup the mask in one hand, place it over your nose and mouth, and pull the head straps over the crown of your head, not around the neck. Once in place, use both index fingers to press and mould the nose clip along the bridge of your nose until it conforms to the shape of your face. A loose or poorly moulded nose clip is the most common cause of a compromised seal.
Carry out a positive pressure user seal check before entering the hazardous area: cover the exhalation valve with your hand and breathe out gently. If air escapes at the face seal rather than through the valve, reposition and readjust the mask before proceeding. Dispose of the mask at the end of the working period or sooner if it becomes damaged, soiled or breathing resistance increases significantly.

What is the difference between FFP2 and FFP3 masks, and when do I need FFP3?
FFP2 masks filter at least 94% of airborne particles and are suitable for many general dust environments. FFP3 masks filter at least 99% and carry an NPF of 50x OEL, making them the right choice when working with hazardous fine dusts such as silica, asbestos-contaminated materials, welding fumes from coated or stainless metals, and specific metal dusts including nickel, chromium and cadmium. If your COSHH assessment specifies FFP3, use FFP3 — FFP2 is not a close enough substitute in those situations.
Does the exhalation valve reduce the level of protection?
No. The valve only affects exhalation — breathed-out air exits through the valve rather than pushing back through the filter material. On the inhalation side, all incoming air still passes through the FFP3-rated filter. The valve makes the mask more comfortable to wear for longer periods without compromising inward protection, which is why valved versions tend to get left on rather than pulled down during the working day.
Can these masks be reused across multiple shifts?
These are disposable filtering half masks and are not designed or certified for cleaning and reuse. In practice, a mask that has been worn through a dusty shift will have a loaded filter and a stretched or repositioned face seal. Replace at the start of each working day or sooner if the mask becomes damp, visibly soiled, physically damaged or noticeably more difficult to breathe through.
