These twisted heavy duty restraint straps are the standard fix for tying roof trusses, rafters and joists back to masonry where horizontal restraint is required. If you’ve had a building inspector on site, you’ll know he’s looking for these — and rightly so. Manufactured to BS 5268 Part 3 and compliant with current Building Regulations for horizontal restraint, these are not an area where you want to cut corners or improvise with whatever’s left in the van.

The twist in the strap is what makes it work in this application. It allows the strap to change plane, typically running across the top of a joist or rafter and then turning down to fix into the masonry or blockwork below. Without the twist, you’d be fighting the material to get it to lie flat in both directions. Simple enough idea, but it saves a lot of grief on site.

Where Twisted Heavy Duty Restraint Straps Get Used

Galvanised steel construction gives these straps solid corrosion resistance, which matters in roof voids where condensation and temperature swings are a fact of life. The galvanising is there for the long haul — once the roof is tiled and the building is closed up, these straps are doing their job quietly for decades without anyone giving them a second thought.

Two Sizes, One Pack

This pack covers the two most commonly specified sizes: 1000/100 and 600/100. The numbers refer to the overall length and the fixing width respectively, so you’ve got options depending on your joist or rafter spacing and the depth of the wall plate or masonry you’re fixing into. Having both sizes in one pack is genuinely useful on a busy roof where conditions vary between gable ends and internal walls.

Supplied in a pack of 10, they’re well suited to straightforward roof restraint work on new builds, extensions and loft conversions. Structural metalwork like this doesn’t need to be complicated — it just needs to be right.

Pro Tip: When fixing into lightweight blockwork, use a frame fixing or suitable cavity anchor rather than a standard screw to make sure you're getting proper pull-out resistance where the strap meets the wall.
