When you’re brazing 28mm copper or soldering a stubborn joint that just won’t take heat, standard propane starts to feel a bit underpowered. This Vortex MAPP gas canister delivers the extra temperature you need to get proper flow on larger diameter pipework and heavy fittings. It burns up to 10% hotter than other MAP-style gases, which means faster heat-up times and cleaner joints on work that would have you standing there all day with a propane bottle.

MAPP gas sits somewhere between propane and acetylene in terms of heat output. You get significantly higher flame temperatures than propane without the safety headaches and storage restrictions that come with acetylene cylinders. For plumbers working on commercial installations, heating engineers dealing with larger bore pipework, and refrigeration fitters brazing copper to copper, it fills that gap where propane falls short but acetylene feels like overkill.

Where MAPP Gas Makes The Difference

The real benefit shows on jobs where heat dissipation is working against you. Large diameter copper pipes, fittings with significant mass, and joints close to valves or components that act as heat sinks all respond better to the higher flame temperature. You spend less time waiting for the metal to reach working temperature, use less gas per joint, and reduce the risk of overheating one spot while the rest of the fitting stays cold.

This particular formulation uses a non-hazardous blend that meets carrier requirements for standard freight. That might not sound exciting until you’ve tried ordering restricted gases and found half the couriers won’t touch them. It means you can get these delivered without the usual complications, store them sensibly on site, and not worry about compliance headaches when you’re buying in bulk.

Torch Compatibility

The canister works with any Vortex brazing torch as well as Turbolite systems. The standard CGA 600 fitting means it should connect to most professional-grade torches designed for MAP-type gases. If your current torch runs on propane canisters with the same thread pattern, it will likely accept this without any adapter needed.

Each canister contains 453g of gas in a non-refillable steel body. For regular brazing work on domestic installations you’ll get through several joints per canister. On heavier commercial work with larger fittings, consumption goes up accordingly, but the faster joint times offset the higher cost per gram compared to propane.

Worth noting that MAPP burns with a slightly different flame characteristic to propane. The inner cone is more defined and the overall flame is somewhat more aggressive. If you’re used to propane, give yourself a joint or two to adjust your technique before working on anything critical. The higher temperature means you’ll reach brazing heat faster than you might expect.

Pro Tip: Keep the inner cone of the flame just off the copper surface rather than letting it touch directly. MAPP runs hot enough to oxidise the metal if you hold it too close, which can affect solder flow.
