All-steel, non-flammable expansion plugs for lightweight aggregate blocks and fire-rated installations. Yellow finish. External teeth grip the material on expansion, internal ribs interlock with wood or chipboard screw threads for a solid, load-bearing fixing.
Yellow metal expansion plugs are a straightforward solution to a problem that catches plenty of people out: what do you use when plastic simply isn’t allowed? Fire escape routes, stairwells, and other protected areas covered by the 18th Edition of BS 7671 require fixings that won’t fail in the heat of a fire. Plastic plugs melt. These don’t. All-steel construction means they hold their shape and their grip when temperatures rise, making them the correct choice where regulations apply.
These plugs are designed for lightweight aggregate blocks, which can be awkward to fix into reliably. The external teeth bite into the surrounding material as the plug expands, spreading the load and holding firm rather than spinning or pulling through the way a standard plug might in a softer block. The internal ribs are machined to interlock specifically with wood and chipboard screw threads, so you get a mechanical connection rather than just friction. That distinction matters when you’re fixing fire door closers, exit signs, or cable management systems that need to stay put.
Where Yellow Metal Expansion Plugs Are Used on Site
The fire-rating compliance angle is the main reason these get specified, but they turn up in plenty of other situations too. Anywhere you’d normally reach for a plastic wall plug but have reason to want something more permanent or regulation-compliant, these fit the bill. They’re commonly used when fixing electrical containment systems, where the 18th Edition wiring regulations explicitly state that supports must be of a material unlikely to prematurely collapse in a fire. That’s not a grey area.
Beyond compliance, there’s a practical case for using all-steel plugs in damp or externally exposed situations where plastic can degrade over time. The yellow colour-coding also helps on busy sites where different plug sizes are in use and mix-ups cause problems.
Load Bearing and Installation
The external tooth expansion system gives a noticeably higher pull-out resistance compared to a standard nylon plug in the same material. Installation is the same familiar process: drill to the correct diameter, insert the plug flush, drive the screw. No special tools, no learning curve. Box of 100 means you’re set for a full installation run without making trips back to the van.
Pro Tip: Always check your drill bit is the correct diameter for the plug before you start: a hole that's even a millimetre too wide will stop the external teeth from getting a proper bite, and you'll lose most of the load rating.
