Truss Clip – 47mm x 110mm – Box 25

Galvanised truss clips for fixing trusses, girders and rafters to wall plates. Also works as a general-purpose timber connector wherever two members cross. Simple to fit, no special tools required.
Truss clips 47mm wide are one of those small items that end up doing a lot of work on a roof build. They sit quietly at the junction between truss and wall plate, transferring loads and keeping the whole roof structure tied down properly. Simple in design, but structural in purpose — these are not optional extras.
Each clip is punched from galvanised steel with pre-formed nail holes, making them fast to fix on site. You just position the clip over the crossing members and nail off through the holes. There is no cutting, bending or fabricating involved, which is exactly what you want when you are halfway up a scaffold in February.
Where Truss Clips 47mm Are Used on Roof Structures
The primary application is fixing prefabricated roof trusses to the timber wall plate, a connection required by building regulations in domestic construction. The clip wraps around the truss heel and bites into the wall plate below, providing both restraint and uplift resistance. They are also commonly used to connect girder trusses, rafters, and purlins wherever a simple crossing-member connection is needed without the bulk of a joist hanger.
Multi-Purpose Connector Use
Beyond roof trusses, these clips get pressed into service as general structural connectors wherever two timber members cross and need tying together. Floor structures, stud work bracing, outbuilding frames — if two bits of wood cross and you need them to stay that way, a truss clip is often the quickest solution on site.
At 110mm in length, these clips have enough bearing surface to provide a solid connection without pulling through the timber under load. Sold in a box of 25, they suit a typical domestic roof or form a solid working stock for general timber frame work.
Pro Tip: Always nail every hole in the clip, not just a couple to hold it in place — partial fixing significantly reduces the load capacity and will not satisfy building regs.
Truss clips are used primarily in domestic roof construction to connect prefabricated trussed rafters to timber wall plates. They are a standard requirement on new-build and extension roofwork where positive truss fixing is needed. The same clip works well on girder trusses, traditional cut roofs, purlins and any timber frame application where crossing members need a positive mechanical connection.
Best For
- Fixing roof trusses to wall plates
- Girder truss connections
- Traditional cut rafter fixing
- General crossing timber member restraint
- Outbuilding and garden structure framing
Compatible With
- 47mm timber sections
- Prefabricated trussed rafters
- Timber wall plates
- Purlins and ridge boards
- Stud work framing
Key Specifications
- Width: 47mm
- Length: 110mm
- Galvanised steel construction
- Pre-punched nail holes
- No special tools required
Not suitable for: Not suitable for use with engineered timber I-joists without manufacturer confirmation on fixing method. Not a substitute for a joist hanger where a full bearing seat is required.
Position the clip squarely over the junction of the two timber members, with the base plate bearing flat against the wall plate and the upstand sitting tight against the side of the truss. Nail off through every pre-punched hole using the appropriate round wire nails — typically 3.35mm x 30mm galvanised nails, though check the manufacturer spec if working to a structural engineer's detail.
Make sure both members are in full contact before fixing. Any gap between truss and wall plate will put bending stress into the clip rather than direct compression, which is not what it is designed for. On a full roof build, clip every truss at both bearing points without exception.
- Check the truss is seated correctly on the wall plate with no gaps before fixing
- Position the clip centrally over the junction with the base flat on the wall plate
- Hold the clip tight against the side of the truss
- Nail through every pre-punched hole using appropriate galvanised round wire nails
- Repeat at both bearing points on every truss across the roof
- Check all clips are fully nailed before signing off the structure
What nail size should I use with these 47mm truss clips?
Galvanised round wire nails are the standard choice, typically 3.35mm diameter by 30mm long. If you are working to a structural engineer's specification, check their fixing schedule as they may call up a specific nail size for the load case.
Do I need to use a truss clip on every single truss?
Yes, in domestic construction building regulations require positive fixing at every truss bearing point. Clipping every other one is not acceptable and will not satisfy a building inspector.
Can these clips be used externally or are they only for internal roof structures?
The galvanised finish provides a reasonable level of corrosion resistance for typical roof void conditions, but these are not rated for fully exposed external environments. For open or external structures where the clips will be directly exposed to weather long-term, a stainless steel or hot-dip galvanised connector would be more appropriate.
Formed from galvanised steel strip with a punched hole pattern sized for round wire nails, these truss clips provide mechanical restraint at timber crossing-member junctions. The galvanised coating offers corrosion resistance suitable for internal and semi-exposed roof void conditions. The 47mm width is matched to standard sawn softwood truss sections used in UK domestic construction.
