Insulation retaining clips are a simple component that does an important job in cavity wall construction. Each clip fits onto a cavity wall tie after it has been bedded into the mortar joint of the inner leaf, then grips the insulation board firmly against the face of the inner leaf while the outer leaf is built up around it. Without them, boards can shift or bow outward during construction, which creates gaps in the insulation layer and undermines the thermal performance of the wall. A cheap fix for an expensive problem.

This pack contains 250 clips, making it well suited to new-build plots, extensions, or any project where you are building in volume. At under £11 for 250, the cost per clip is negligible compared to the labour involved in correcting misplaced insulation after the fact.

How Insulation Retaining Clips Work in Cavity Wall Construction

Once the wall tie is in place, the insulation board is offered up and the retaining clip grips the board flat against the inner leaf. This keeps the board square across the cavity, which is what you need for consistent U-values and no cold bridging through the insulation layer. The method is used across standard block and brick cavity wall systems as well as steel-framed buildings with masonry outer skins.

The clips are compatible with the most common cavity wall tie profiles, so they will suit most domestic and light commercial sites without any special ordering. The wall ties themselves are sold separately, and the tie specification for your project will determine which type you need alongside these clips.

Joints between insulation boards should be kept tight and staggered to avoid continuous vertical gaps through the layer. Getting that detail right at every course is one of those things that makes the difference on a thermal inspection.

Pro Tip: Always stagger the vertical joints between insulation boards and make sure each board is cut cleanly to size before clipping, as a ragged edge will cause the clip to sit at an angle and put uneven stress on the tie.
