A 9-piece dry diamond core drill kit covering 38mm to 117mm. Comes with a heavy duty dust swivel unit and rubber vacuum adaptor. Drills masonry up to three times faster than slotted equivalents when used with dust extraction.
The Mexco 9 piece DCX90 diamond core set is built around one idea: drill masonry faster, cleaner and with less effort than a slotted core drill can manage. When paired with a suitable dust extractor through the included swivel unit, these solid barrel dry core drills can get through brick, block and similar masonry in excess of 300% faster than their slotted counterparts. That is not a small margin. It is the difference between clearing a job in a morning and still being there after lunch.
This kit is aimed squarely at plumbers, builders and general tradespeople who need a compact, practical system covering the most common hole sizes. The range runs from 38mm up to 117mm, which handles everything from cable and pipe penetrations through to larger service entries. Three core drill sizes are included: 38mm, 52mm and 117mm. For jobs that need something in between, Mexco cores are available separately.
What the Mexco DCX90 Diamond Core Set Includes
The kit is well thought out and comes with everything needed to get started. You get the three dry core drills along with a 150mm extension bar, an 80mm SDS adaptor, an 80mm hex adaptor, a 175mm A-Taper pilot drill and a drift key. The dust swivel unit and rubber vacuum adaptor are the pieces that tie the system together, connecting the core drill to your extraction unit and keeping the dust from going everywhere. Anyone who has drilled a 117mm hole in an old brick wall with a slotted drill and no extraction will understand why this matters.
The solid barrel design is what enables the speed advantage. Without slots to allow debris to escape, the drill relies entirely on extraction to clear the waste material. Use it without extraction and you will get nowhere fast. With a decent extractor running, it clears efficiently and the drill can move at pace. Keep the extraction on throughout the cut.
Drill Motor Requirements
Mexco specify a minimum 850W drill motor fitted with a slipping clutch. That last part is important. Core drilling in masonry puts significant torque through the machine, and a slipping clutch protects both the operator and the drill when the core snags. Do not attempt this with a standard hammer drill that lacks a clutch. An SDS plus machine rated at 850W or above is the sensible choice for most of these sizes, with something beefier recommended for the 117mm core in harder materials.
The Mexco DCX90 diamond core set is a practical investment for any tradesperson doing regular masonry penetration work. The kit format means you are not hunting for adaptors on site, and the dust management system keeps the work area clean enough that the plasterer will not want to fight you.
Pro Tip: Always uncoil and fully connect your extraction hose before starting the cut; even a partial blockage in the hose will slow extraction enough to stall the core and overheat the segment bond.
These dry diamond cores are used wherever clean, accurate holes are needed through masonry. Plumbers run them for soil pipe and waste penetrations through block work and brick. Electricians use the smaller sizes for cable entries and back boxes in dense blockwork. Builders use the 117mm core for soil and vent stacks, boiler flue entries and similar large service penetrations. They work across sand-faced brick, dense concrete block, aerated block and similar masonry substrates. The kit is particularly useful on new build and refurbishment sites where multiple penetrations are needed and speed genuinely matters.

Not suitable for: Solid barrel dry core drills must not be used without dust extraction connected and running. These cores are not designed for wet cutting or use with water feed systems, and should not be used in reinforced concrete where rebar contact is likely.
Fit the appropriate adaptor for your drill motor (SDS or hex) and attach the pilot drill before starting. Connect the dust swivel unit to your extractor and confirm the extraction is running before the core touches the surface. Mark your centre point, locate the pilot and start the drill at a steady speed without hammer action.
Keep consistent forward pressure without forcing the drill. The extraction is doing the work of clearing debris, so if the drill starts to labour or slow unexpectedly, back off and check the hose is clear. Once through, use the drift key to release the core slug from the barrel. Check the segment condition periodically, particularly on harder block or dense brick.
Select the correct core drill size for the hole required and fit it securely to the appropriate adaptor
Attach the dust swivel unit to the rear of the core drill assembly
Connect your dust extractor hose to the rubber vacuum adaptor on the swivel unit
Mark the centre point of the hole and fit the pilot drill to guide the initial cut
Start the extractor before bringing the core to the surface
Begin drilling at a controlled speed without hammer action, letting the pilot locate the cut
Apply steady forward pressure and keep the extractor running throughout
If the drill slows or labours, withdraw slightly and check extraction is clear before continuing
Once through, withdraw the drill and switch off the extractor
Use the drift key to push the core slug free from the barrel
Can I use the DCX90 cores without dust extraction connected?
No. Solid barrel dry core drills depend entirely on extraction to clear debris from the cut. Without it, the waste material packs into the barrel almost immediately, the drill stalls and the heat build-up will damage the diamond segments quickly. Always have extraction running before the core touches the surface.
What drill do I need to run this kit?
Mexco specify a minimum 850W drill motor fitted with a slipping clutch. An SDS Plus machine in that power range is the most practical choice for the 38mm and 52mm cores. For the 117mm core in harder materials, a more powerful rotary-only machine with a clutch is worth considering. Do not use a standard hammer drill without a clutch mechanism.
The DCX90 range uses solid barrel diamond core construction, which eliminates the slots found on standard dry cores and concentrates all debris clearance through the extraction system. The segments are bonded for dry masonry use across brick, block and similar substrates. The dust swivel unit allows the core to rotate freely while maintaining a sealed connection to the extractor hose, keeping extraction effective throughout the cut.
