The Mexco 11 piece DCX90 diamond core set is a well-thought-out kit for anyone who regularly needs to put holes through masonry on site. Covering five core sizes from 38mm right up to 127mm, it handles the kind of range that a plumber, builder or general tradesman actually encounters day to day. Whether you’re chasing through a block wall for pipework or cutting a duct penetration, this set has the size you need without rooting through a van shelf for the right bit.
What makes the DCX90 range worth using is the slotted and fluted steel barrel design. The fluting pulls waste material out of the cut as you go, which keeps the core running cooler and reduces the chance of the drill binding mid-cut. Anyone who’s had a core seize in a hard block wall will appreciate that detail.
What’s in the Mexco DCX90 Diamond Core Set
The kit contains five dry core drills at 38mm, 52mm, 65mm, 117mm and 127mm. Alongside those you get four adaptors: 80mm SDS, 80mm hex, 250mm SDS and 250mm hex. That covers the two most common drive fittings in most professional drills, and the longer 250mm adaptors give you extra reach where wall thickness demands it. A 10mm by 175mm A-taper pilot drill and a drift key round out the set. The pilot drill keeps your cores centred on the mark, which matters more than people think when you’re drilling next to a lintel or cutting a tight cable entry.
Everything is stored in a robust plastic and aluminium case that keeps the set organised and protects the cores in transit. Importantly, all eleven items can be bought individually, so if you burn through the 65mm core on a run of jobs, you’re not forced to replace the whole set.
Using the DCX90 Set Correctly
These are dry diamond core drills, so no water feed is required, but they do need a decent motor behind them. Mexco specify a minimum 850W drill with a slipping clutch. The slipping clutch is not optional; if the core grabs suddenly in hard aggregate, a machine without one will try to spin your wrist instead of slipping. A good SDS Plus or SDS Max drill in rotary-only mode is the usual choice. Don’t try to run these from a lightweight combi drill and wonder why the results are poor.
The Mexco DCX90 diamond core set is a practical, site-ready kit at a sensible price point, with the individual restocking option making it a long-term investment rather than a one-off purchase.
Pro Tip: Always run these cores in rotary-only mode on your SDS drill, not hammer action. Hammering with a diamond core will crack the segment bonding and wreck the bit far faster than the masonry ever would.
