These screws can be driven directly into softwood and many sheet materials without pre-drilling, thanks to the gash point tip. Use a PZ2 bit for most sizes up to 5.0mm, and a PZ3 for the 6.0mm range. Keep your drill speed moderate going in to avoid camming out on the drive recess.
In hardwoods or when fixing close to the edge of a board, drill a pilot hole slightly narrower than the shank to prevent splitting. The milling nibs will pull the head flush on most softwoods without a countersink bit, but a quick countersink pass on hardwood or painted joinery gives a cleaner result.
