Jiffy Joist Hangers provide a quick, reliable method of connecting timber joists to a header or trimmer beam without the need for skew nailing or notching. Available in sizes from 38mm to 150mm, these joist hangers cover the full spread of standard structural timber sections used in floor construction, stairwell trimming and underslung joist applications. Whether you are working on a domestic floor or a heavier commercial build, there is a Jiffy hanger rated for the job.
Each hanger is manufactured from pre-galvanised mild steel to BS EN 10142 DX51D Z275, which is the standard you would expect for a structural fixing that is going to sit inside a floor build-up for the next fifty years. The galvanised coating gives reliable corrosion resistance in the damp conditions that timber floors can sometimes see, particularly at ground level or in older properties where moisture movement is a fact of life.
Jiffy Joist Hanger Range: Short, Standard and Extended Leg
The Jiffy range covers three leg configurations to suit different structural situations. Short and standard leg hangers both feature increased hole centres, which spreads the nail load over a greater area of the header timber and reduces the risk of splitting. This is a small design detail that makes a real difference when you are working with engineered timber or older softwood that does not always behave as predictably as you might like.
The extended leg version uses a thicker steel construction specifically for heavy duty applications where the imposed load is higher. If you are trimming around a stairwell opening or supporting a double joist carrying a significant span, the extended leg hanger is the correct choice rather than doubling up on standard hangers and hoping for the best.
Fixing Jiffy Joist Hangers Correctly
Jiffy Joist Hangers are designed to be fixed using 30 x 3.75mm square twist nails, and every available nail hole should be used. This is not optional. The structural performance of a joist hanger depends entirely on the nail pattern being complete. Leaving holes unfilled reduces the load capacity of the connection and is one of the most common installation errors on site. Square twist nails grip more effectively in timber than smooth shank nails, which is why they are specified here rather than a standard wire nail.
The hangers are available in box quantities of 10, 20, 50 and 100, so you can buy a small pack for a single repair job or a full box of 100 for a new floor where you need consistent supply throughout the fix. Sizes run from 38mm right through to 150mm, covering timber widths of 38, 44, 47, 50, 63, 75, 90, 100, 125 and 150mm. That range covers the vast majority of sawn and regularised timber sections in common use, so you are unlikely to be caught out.
Jiffy Joist Hangers are a well-established product in UK structural carpentry, and for good reason. They are straightforward to install, meet the relevant material standard, and give a connection that is considerably more reliable than traditional skew nailing, particularly at the wider joist sizes where getting a consistent nail angle is genuinely difficult.
Pro Tip: Always fill every nail hole in the hanger using 30 x 3.75mm square twist nails: leaving even two or three holes empty can meaningfully reduce the load capacity of the connection, which matters most on the longer spans where failure is least welcome.
Jiffy Joist Hangers are used wherever a timber joist needs to connect to a header or trimmer beam at the same level rather than bearing on top of it. The most common application is domestic floor construction, where joists run between wall plates or steel beams and need a secure end connection. Stairwell trimming is another typical use, with hangers carrying the trimmer joist around the opening. Underslung joist arrangements, where the joist hangs below the main beam, also rely on this type of hanger. The range suits light through to heavy duty structural carpentry and is a standard specification across residential, commercial and refurbishment projects.

Key Properties
- Pre-galvanised mild steel to BS EN 10142 DX51D Z275
- Increased hole centres on short and standard leg versions
- Thicker extended leg version for heavy duty applications
- Fix with 30 x 3.75mm square twist nails
- All nail holes must be filled for full load capacity
Not suitable for: Jiffy Joist Hangers in this format are designed for timber-to-timber connections only and are not suitable for fixing timber joists directly to masonry or steel. Separate hanger types are available for those applications.
Select the hanger size to match the actual width of the joist section being supported. Position the hanger on the header timber so the joist will sit level and at the correct height, then nail the hanger to the header using 30 x 3.75mm square twist nails through all available holes in the back and side flanges.
Drop the joist into the seated hanger and nail through the remaining holes in the side flanges into the joist itself. Again, every hole must be filled. The square twist nail specification is important here: do not substitute smooth shank nails as they will not achieve the same withdrawal resistance in the timber.
- Select the correct hanger size to match the joist width, for example 47mm for 47mm regularised timber.
- Mark the hanger position on the header beam, ensuring the finished joist height will be correct for the floor level.
- Hold the hanger against the header and nail through all back flange holes using 30 x 3.75mm square twist nails.
- Check the hanger is plumb and square before proceeding.
- Lower the joist into the hanger seat and ensure it is fully bedded.
- Nail through all side flange holes into the joist using 30 x 3.75mm square twist nails.
- Check all nail holes on both the header and joist side are fully filled before moving on.
What nails should be used with Jiffy Joist Hangers?
Jiffy Joist Hangers are specified for use with 30 x 3.75mm square twist nails. Square twist nails provide better grip and withdrawal resistance in timber compared to smooth shank nails. All available nail holes must be filled to achieve the full rated load capacity of the hanger.
What is the difference between the short, standard and extended leg versions?
Short and standard leg Jiffy hangers both feature increased hole centres to spread the nail load over a greater area, reducing the risk of splitting the header timber. The extended leg version uses a thicker steel section and is designed specifically for heavy duty applications such as stairwell trimming or longer spans carrying higher loads.
Are these joist hangers suitable for use with engineered timber joists such as I-joists?
Jiffy Joist Hangers in this timber-to-timber range are designed for solid sawn or regularised timber sections. For engineered timber products such as I-joists or LVL beams, you should check the joist manufacturer's own fixing recommendations, as some engineered sections require specific hanger profiles or have restrictions on where nails can be placed in the web or flange.
Jiffy Joist Hangers are manufactured from pre-galvanised mild steel conforming to BS EN 10142 DX51D Z275. The Z275 designation indicates a zinc coating weight of 275 grams per square metre, providing corrosion resistance suitable for use within internal timber floor structures. Short and standard leg versions feature increased hole centres for improved load distribution. The extended leg version uses a heavier gauge construction to handle greater imposed loads in structural applications.
