Jiffy Joist Hangers provide a quick, reliable method of connecting timber joists to a header or trimmer beam without the need for skew nailing or notching. Available in sizes from 38mm to 150mm, these joist hangers cover the full spread of standard structural timber sections used in floor construction, stairwell trimming and underslung joist applications. Whether you are working on a domestic floor or a heavier commercial build, there is a Jiffy hanger rated for the job.

Each hanger is manufactured from pre-galvanised mild steel to BS EN 10142 DX51D Z275, which is the standard you would expect for a structural fixing that is going to sit inside a floor build-up for the next fifty years. The galvanised coating gives reliable corrosion resistance in the damp conditions that timber floors can sometimes see, particularly at ground level or in older properties where moisture movement is a fact of life.

Jiffy Joist Hanger Range: Short, Standard and Extended Leg

The Jiffy range covers three leg configurations to suit different structural situations. Short and standard leg hangers both feature increased hole centres, which spreads the nail load over a greater area of the header timber and reduces the risk of splitting. This is a small design detail that makes a real difference when you are working with engineered timber or older softwood that does not always behave as predictably as you might like.

The extended leg version uses a thicker steel construction specifically for heavy duty applications where the imposed load is higher. If you are trimming around a stairwell opening or supporting a double joist carrying a significant span, the extended leg hanger is the correct choice rather than doubling up on standard hangers and hoping for the best.

Fixing Jiffy Joist Hangers Correctly

Jiffy Joist Hangers are designed to be fixed using 30 x 3.75mm square twist nails, and every available nail hole should be used. This is not optional. The structural performance of a joist hanger depends entirely on the nail pattern being complete. Leaving holes unfilled reduces the load capacity of the connection and is one of the most common installation errors on site. Square twist nails grip more effectively in timber than smooth shank nails, which is why they are specified here rather than a standard wire nail.

The hangers are available in box quantities of 10, 20, 50 and 100, so you can buy a small pack for a single repair job or a full box of 100 for a new floor where you need consistent supply throughout the fix. Sizes run from 38mm right through to 150mm, covering timber widths of 38, 44, 47, 50, 63, 75, 90, 100, 125 and 150mm. That range covers the vast majority of sawn and regularised timber sections in common use, so you are unlikely to be caught out.

Jiffy Joist Hangers are a well-established product in UK structural carpentry, and for good reason. They are straightforward to install, meet the relevant material standard, and give a connection that is considerably more reliable than traditional skew nailing, particularly at the wider joist sizes where getting a consistent nail angle is genuinely difficult.

Pro Tip: Always fill every nail hole in the hanger using 30 x 3.75mm square twist nails: leaving even two or three holes empty can meaningfully reduce the load capacity of the connection, which matters most on the longer spans where failure is least welcome.
